The American Civil War or as some called “the war between the states” lasted from 1861-1865. This war was a monumental turning point for the United States at that time. It was a battle between the Union and the Confederate armies to determine who had the power to make decisions regarding the current enslavement of people and to reform the current government structure. This war was the most expensive and deadliest to ever be fought on American soil, with thousands of soldiers killed and the south left in ruin. The Civil War had been simmering for quite some time before anger erupted and it began in 1861. This brought up massive tensions among the States. One side felt it was about human rights and the other side felt the economy would suffer if the workforce of the slaves were let go. So as they seemed to be at an impasse and a war developed.
Oftentimes it's hard to see the good effects of war and death. But this war was needed at the time and did have some positive lasting effects. This war led to a unity among our state and federal governments, it led to the freeing of millions of slaves, and it is often credited with strengthening the overall economy through income taxes and banking. In conclusion, the American Civil War helped bring the states together as a nation. It helped to form our current United States economy and government. Including adding the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to our constitution. Our nation divided itself because it didn't want to work together in making laws that created racial equality and economic stability for all Americans. These issues seem to be a forever battle in so many wars, the United States needs to learn from its mistakes and never let this happen
