Families are an ancient institution that have existed for a long period of time. Over this amount of time, they have experienced change, continuity, and diversity that has resulted in some resentment and issues from society and cultural views. Three of the issues that will be addressed are going to discuss the high rate of divorce and the effect on separated families, the effect of gender dynamics on families, and the difficulties that lesbian and gay parents encounter. The rate of divorce has remained high in the United States since the late 19th century which has resulted in the separation of not only spouses but their children as well. Growing individualism has been a large outcome of high divorce due to, “men’s economic losses putting added financial burdens on families and women’s employment making them less economically dependent on their husbands,” (Ciabattari 105). According to Ciabattari, the population groups that are at high risk for divorce are spread across education levels, race-ethnicity, family of origin, age at marriage, timing of first birth, heterogamy, and remarriages (110). Those who receive less college education and have only a high school diploma or a GED are more likely to cohabit than marry which in turn lowers the divorce rate because they can’t get divorced.
