The Impact of Cyberbullying on Teens
Cyberbullying is a serious problem for many young teens because it harms a person’s self esteem and damages their self image. In order for bullying to be defined as cyberbullying, the behavior must be repeated, deliberate, harmful and take place on a digital platform. The reason why cyberbullying is so personally damaging is because it is constantly repeated and there is an imbalance of power between the bully and the victim. In addition, cyberbullying is very permanent because information online can never be erased or removed. Clearly defining cyberbullying and examining prevention and coping methods will ensure that future generations will be more protected as they navigate the digital world.

As technology is becoming more popular, many young teens receive their first cell phone sometime between the ages of 8-12 years old. These phones allow teens to access social media, text, make calls, and search the web for information. Although there are advantages of having a cell phone, there are some disadvantages in relation to cyberbullying. Since smartphones have a lot of capabilities, they can often be misused in a wrong, harmful way. Technology gives people the opportunity to express different opinions, but this can lead to cyberbullying if others cannot respect alternate viewpoints. In addition, people have an easier way to access individuals online and find out private personal information. That information can be used against teens in the form of insults, threats, and harassment. Since cyberbullying tends to be anonymous, an individual might not even know who is behind the bullying. It is also difficult to detect because it takes place in a digital world where adults are not directly supervising the teens. In addition, the abuse doesn’t end at one specific time or in one specific location; it follows the victim everywhere. All of the cruel comments will remain on the internet.
