Leadership is a popular topic today. The public is fascinated by who leaders are and what leaders do. Too many, leaders were not born but made and it is increasingly accepted, However, that in order to be a good leader, one must have the experience, knowledge, commitment, patience, and most importantly the skill to negotiate and work with others to achieve their goals. Likewise, leadership is so necessary for today’s work environment.
Leadership is the ability to encourage and influence people to take action to accomplish their goal (Gibson & Weber, 2015). The first traits are optimism and self-confidence because Nelson Mandela thinks that South Africa will not have apartheid system forever and he has a strong belief that he can end the apartheid one day. The second traits are honesty and integrity because Nelson Mandela never compromised his integrity despite the extreme challenges he faced. For instance, he has refused conditional release from prison because he needs to renouncing violence, and violent protest that brings changes to the political system in South Africa. He also being truthful about his supporters and followers which make him be elected by them to become the first black president in South Africa. These are emotional stability, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. I found the reasons why Nelson Mandela definitely was a transformational leader. First, his ability to control and manage his emotions where others might be unable was astounding, to the point of embracing those that had imprisoned him. Also emerging from bitterness, he actively places forgiveness at the forefront of moving forward, both for himself and for South Africa. Second, he asserted his opinion tactfully and subtly guided opinion in his favor and also his vision and passion of ending the brutal apartheid system and set his country on a path of freedom was a cause that he was willing to give his life for.
