Nepal is a multicultural, multi-dimensional, multi-lingual, multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation. People of different caste, ethnic, religion, tradition, origin, status and lifestyle live in this country. The majority of people are Hindu. In the other hand Buddhism, Muslim and Christianity are also rapidly spreading. It has a diverse culture. Nepali society is basically a mixture of different groups of people combine together.
People are placed in positions that are higher or lower, superior or inferior in relation to each other by social status, hierarchy, occupation and education. In differentiation society bases status on a certain kind of trait which may be physical or biological such as skin colour, physical appearances, age, sex. There are 4 varnas and 36 castes in our nation. Social discrimination on account of inequality has been in practice between upper caste and lower scheduled caste people. Brahmins are subjected as upper level castes that are known to be scholars, educators, traditionally priest and so on. Top caste enjoys more rights and those at bottom performing more duties got no rights. Dalits are ‘outcastes’ or people who fall outside the four- fold caste system consisting of the Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vysya and Sudra. Dalit’s and untouchable castes people are discriminated by the society. They are always kept at the lower ranking. Untouchable are often assigned the most dirty menial and hazardous jobs. The practice of untouchability can be seen in the village social life of Nepal. Due to the inequality and discrimination of caste there is social distance and physical segregation between people.
