Never Been Kissed: Movie Analysis

The 1999 film Never Been Kissed is a story of twenty-five-year-old Josie Gellar, who is an undercover reporter who poses as a 17-year-old high school student. Josie soon realizes that fitting in in high school now is still just as difficult as the first time around. It is clear and obvious to her that the cool kids don’t want a thing to do with her, so she joins The Denominators, the school’s math team. She is having fun in her second life, but her career is on the line when she can’t come up with a story that doesn’t involve the school lunches, or clothing being returned after its been worn. Her brother Rob joins her in the quest of rediscovery and assists her in forging friendships with Kirsten, Kiersten and Gibbie, the most popular girls on campus. The film is laced with a variety of interpersonal communication between Josie Geller and the three girls Kristin, Kiersten and Gibbie. There are three basic communication skills that are prominent throughout the film, they include the social exchange theory, and the perception process. The social exchange theory suggests that people try to maintain relationships in which the benefits of the relationship will outweigh their costs (pg 291). After selecting what stimulus to pay attention to, and then organizing that information, it is time to decided what it all means. After a night out at the club, Josie finds herself in a bind to get to school on time. She ruses to school to find everyone staring, pointing, and even calling her a looser (selecting the stimulus). She immediately tries to organize this data, and finally she tries to comprehend the meaning for this absurd behavior.
