In the early 1600’s British settlers colonized the east coast of North America forming a total of 13 colonies. These arising colonies began to grow and evolve into different societies despite being from the same region beforehand. One of the reasons that led to distinct separation among regions was social disjunctions. Others significant reasons include various economic incentives and political stance as well as religious motives. With varying social, economic, and religious disjunctions, the New England and Chesapeake regions both evolved into two distinct societies by the start of the 18’th century.
As demand for New World goods increased, the Colonies had to produce. This led to localized industries such as whaling/fishing, logging, shipbuilding, livestock, fur trading, and distilleries in the New England Colonies, a large amount of grain in the Middle Colonies, and agriculture in the Southern Colonies (Kennedy, et al). The differences in the economy in the three different regions of the thirteen colonies were determined by both the people who went there and the environment. The environment limited how the economy was based because an agricultural economy needs good ground for growing, so without good soil, the economy would have to be based on industry. In the New England colonies (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), the economy was dependent on their industries, not their agriculture. The Middle Colonies (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware) were equally dependent on industry as they were on agriculture. The Southern Colonies (Maryland, N. Carolina, S. The New England had very little fertile land, with extreme weather and rocks frozen to the dirt making agriculture hard. In time, they would create a diverse agricultural system to create food for its inhabitants which included fishing as the citizens became top notch shipwrights. So, it turned to industrial endeavours due to the high number of raw resources in the region. The higher population, due to the fertile nature of the inhabitants, could easily support the growing industry of New England. Due to its isolated location with possible enemies surrounding them, the Puritan beliefs tied the families of New England together and united them.
New England has very short farming seasons, causing them to shift from an agricultural society to an industrial society easier. 3. New England also consists of many rivers and streams. During the Industrial Revolution, most factories depended on flowing water to power factories. This also contributed to New England's economy to be industrial rather than agricultural.
The thirteen colonies, which were divided into 3 regions, were all different and unique in many ways. However, the diversity among the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies is perhaps what made them so distinctive. The differences between these three regions affected the way they lived, but later, they gained knowledge by analyzing their mistakes and differences. Although these three regions only had a few things in common, it was the differences among them that helped them grow and learn from one another.
However this was not the most important thing, the most important thing was their education. Their education can be seen in a way as part of their culture. New Englanders were people who were highly educated and view their education as a way of living and also as a necessity. For the founders of the colony of New England established little settlements that offered education for the kids and also for the adults. Also as the people settled in the colony they brought in with them books and also brought other literal devices that helped them gain more education.
New England did not "have all of it 's investments tied up on one place" very like the Chesapeake. The economy depended on angling, shipbuilding, and cultivating. The cultivating in New England was done on a substantially littler scale, notwithstanding. Since the religion (and society) was so family-situated, ranches were generally sufficiently substantial to nourish one 's family, with a little overflow. It was no where close to the span of the huge estates in the Chesapeake.
The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.
The southern colony and New England Colony had many differences. The New England colony was based more in manufacturing while the southern colony was about agriculture as far as their economy. One big difference is that New England colony didn’t believe in slavery like the southern colonies believed. Slaves and indentured servants were the backbone of the Southern economy. They did much of the labor work for the southern colonies cash crops.
The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were a start of the new world for England. These were founded by similar people but, with their strikingly differences, grew into separate political, economic and social structures. Both settlements arose from over-crowdedness in England: people wanted a better life. Virginia was settled by men who were single and looking for opportunities and wealth. They were part of the Anglican religion.
Another similarity between the English provinces in the Chesapeake region and in New England is the connections they had with Native Americans.
