It back fired and gave the Steelers field goal range to kick the winning kick and later costed the linebacker the first 4 games of the next season. The NFL has also made it so that you cannot hit quarterbacks to hard. The NFL has tried to cut down on the injuries given to quarterbacks by giving the unnecessary roughness call to the players. It’s given out when the refs think a hit is “too hard” and gives the offense 15 yards. Later in 2016, the NFL announced a new rule that made it if you got two unsportsmanlike conduct that you will get ejected out of the game after one game involving Carolina Panther’s cornerback Josh
Though the results did find a small link, the NFL tried to cover themselves and downplay the findings. The New York Times were the first to find the skew in the findings by an average of ten percent. Also when interviewed by the Times, the NFL continued to blame the link of brain damage in their players to the use of tobacco and not trauma from the game ( Swhwarz, Bogdanich, and Williams). After the death of a former Hall of Famer, Mike Webster in 2002, Dr. Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian neurosurgeon who lived and worked in Pittsburgh removed his brain and studied it for almost a year. He found a new brain disease that is generated from multiple instances of brain trauma especially in NFL players and named it Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or CTE for short.
At this early time, Pellman stated, “We think issues of knees, of drugs, steroids and drinking are a far greater problem than concussions” (Ezell, 2013). The first real claims that concussions caused brain damage occurred in the late 1990’s when the American Academy of Neurology stated that repeat concussions could lead to brain damage and said that players should be removed from the field of play if signs of a concussion were shown 15 minutes after an injury (Ezell, 2013). Mike Weber, a former NFL player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, claimed in 1999 that he had head injuries that were causing him dementia and left him permanently disabled (Ezell, 2013). This started a major controversy. In 2002, Dr. Bennet Omalu examined Weber’s brain after he died, and found the first case of CTE in and NFL player (Ezell, 2013).
The price tag for NFL is a couple hundred million dollars(Zimmerman). Over 40% of NFL that is not playing anymore have characteristics of having a severe injury to the brain. The NFL found that it was 271 concussions in 2015 (Burdick). Eighteen people have died while playing football in 1905 but there was a gathering that made changes to guaranteed players safety. This is why people need to have the proper gear.
As a twelve time pro bowler, two time league mvp, five time super bowl champion, and 4 time superbowl mvp the case is very well made for brady to be considered the greatest quarterback to ever walk the planet earth. Sadly, he is not the same player he was ten or even eight years ago, he’s getting older as I mentioned earlier and even his rival peyton manning fell off after the best statistical year of any quarterback breaking the single season passing and touchdown record. In the short span of two years peyton was out of the league simply because his body could not take the gruelling punishment he was dished out every sunday for twenty years and brady is not that far
Is Jerry Jones the best General Manager in the NFL???? “Jerry the Owner needs to fire Jerry the General Manager”. If you follow the Dallas Cowboys no doubt you’ve heard that a time or two. I myself have probably said something similar or worse at one point in time. Undoubtedly the subject of Jerry Jones the General Manager is somewhat clouded by the revisionist history most Cowboys fans use when talking about Jimmy Johnson.
While that may seem like a hefty sum, Fletcher Cox of the Philadelphia Eagles just signed a monumental six-year deal on Monday, which guarantees him nearly $56 million of his $103 million contract within nine months of signing. And while Cox’s 2015 season was impressive, it certainly wasn’t the 11 sack, Super Bowl-caliber season Miller had last year. So, it’s easy to see why the Broncos pass rusher feels slighted. And how have the Broncos handled Miller? They’ve already peeled the figurative sticky backing off their “exclusive” franchise tag and slapped Miller with it in March.
Since American football star Michael Webster’s death, Nigerian-American physician, Bennet Omalu performed an autopsy that surprisingly showed his cause of death was from sever damage of the frontal lobe of Webster’s brain. What happened to Webster’s brain is now called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE, which is a degenerative disease. This “sickness” is due to the repeated impact of football related concussions. Since the discovery the NFL and all the players have taken serious repercussions in the attempt of lowering the amount of potential concussions. The sport of football might appear dangerous but now the safety measures have been and are still improving.
Case Citation: Bouchat v. Ravens, 2000, 241 F3d 350 Parties: Frederick Bouchat, Plaintiff-Appellee Baltimore Ravens and NFL Properties Facts: Frederick Bouchat (Plaintiff-appellee) file suit before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, seeking the payment of damages in the amount of $10,000,000. Bouchat alleges that Baltimore Ravens, Inc. and the National Football League Properties (defendants-appellants) had actually committed infringement of his three seperate drawings of his original work. Bouchat also alleged that several other drawings that he created during the concluding parts of 1995 has also been infringed upon. Additional facts showed that the other drawings were in fact created by Frederick Bouchat,
A recent poll taken by ESPN says that almost half of Americans are fans of pro football or the NFL. The NFL (National Football League) is comprised of 32 teams that compete head to head in attempt to achieve the goal of winning the super bowl. However more recently the game of football has been revealed to be more dangerous than originally thought. Autopsies of former NFL players are showing extensive brain damage that could have contributed to their deaths. Today as the game of football progresses into a passing game wide receivers and cornerbacks are taking more punishment and suffering more brain damage.
With cap cuts coming, are the Steelers scouting a new middle linebacker at the combine? As I wrote in one of our past prospect watches, the Steelers could draft a middle linebacker in the mid-round of this year’s draft. Lawrence Timmons is owed over $15 million and his production has slipped over the past few seasons. One of the most decorated middle linebackers in this draft is Scooby Wright out of Arizona. This former two-star recruit burst on the national spotlight leading the Wildcats to an appearance in the Fiesta Bowl in 2014.
In Tom’s second year, Patriots’ starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe got injured. Tom immediately took over the team and took them to a Super Bowl and received the MVP for the game. All was going good for Brady until the 2008 season when he suffered a severe knee injury that benched him for the whole season. Many worried that this injury would be the end for Tom Brady but he was back for the next season. In 2011, Tom Brady made the headlines by making it to another Super Bowl.
He also finished with 1,997 rushing yards with 29 touchdowns while also having 203 receiving yards with 2 touchdowns. After college the Miami Dolphins in the 3rd round of the 1979 NFL draft drafted Tony. Tony Nathan was a football star while playing for the Dolphins. While playing in the NFL he had many great games. One of those games being the 1981 divisional playoff game where Tony had 169 total yards of offense and 2 touchdowns.
Since the beginning of football, there has been too much head to head contact. According to Dr Weil (2016), “4,500 former professional football players filed a complaint of the consequences of concussion (long term effects).” These long term effects include such as Alzheimer 's, Parkinson 's, or severe cognitive impairment. About $870 million has been spent on National Football League(NFL) players for concussion related injuries. NFL players are literally being paid to play the game, but what they don 't think of is having to suffer the long term concussion effects. For example, Mike Webster, former Steeler player, was said to be one of the greatest centers alive.
Duerson, also, reportedly suffered ten concussions in his eleven seasons in the NFL (Fox News). Just to put that in perspective, experts today say that if an athlete has three concussions in a lifetime, they should no longer play any contact sport (KnowConcussion.org). The very fact that Duerson was allowed to continue playing after 10 concussions just emphasizes the fact of how corrupt the NFL was, and still is, on concussions. Duerson went on the kill himself later in his life. The New York Times reported that hours before he killed himself, he sent text messages to his family, requesting that his brain tissue be examined for research (Schwarz).
