In order to be an effective leader, one must possess the determination, vision, and perseverance to achieve goals that will bring their state or country success. With that, a leader must obtain the trust of their people by setting an example by which they want their supporters to follow. Furthermore, a leader should not only display attributes of intelligence, reason, and cleverness, but also compassion, and kindness. Without these essential characteristics, a leader is unable to adequately make fair and informed decisions in favor of their constituency. Niccoló Machiavelli was an Italian writer during the Renaissance, most commonly known for his political thesis, The Prince. In his book, Machiavelli expresses his outlook of a successful leader thinking that an effective leader should, for example, be the master of all things associated with war, should be compassionate and kind, (but not too much so, as it can cause disorder), and should be either virtuous, or virtuous-appearing.
