Night Hoops by Carl Deuker
My book was Night Hoops by Carl Deuker about a story of a freshman basketball player who is fighting for a spot on the varsity lineup and is continuously being benched due to poor performance. Even though he does poorly at the start of the season as it goes on he earns his varsity spot and gets to play with his two other freshman classmates Trent and Luke. But at the start of the book Nick's view of Trent was very different. Nick believed that Trent was a bully and a bad kid that should be avoided and Trent help him prove that after Trent and his older brother Zack almost drown him in sewer water. But Nick soon learns that without the negative influence of his brother

Who at the beginning of the book are very different from each other. At the start of the book, Trent is seen as the school bully that no one likes and is involved in many bad activities with his brother Zack. But Trent is also good at basketball even though he doesn’t play for the school he and Nick play on the same community court and Trent is not someone you want to play with,” every guy on the court knew he was cheating, but no one wanted to back me”(Deuker 2). Trent would play dirty and threaten anyone that tried to call fouls against him. This is when Nick first starts disliking Trent but it only gets worse when one day while playing football in PE Nick accidentally pushes Trent into a ditch of muddy water and Trent promises revenge. Then later that day on his way home from school Nick gets attacked by Trent and Zack,” It was no use. I was drowning. They were killing me”(Deuker 36). They had gotten Nick and dunked him into a similar puddle of water nearly drowning him. After this, Nick assumes Trent will come after him for the rest of the year but surprisingly the next day Trent acts like nothing happened and Nick goes through his day without hearing from Trent. Until Nick’s P.E. class where they start a basketball tournament. Everyone knows the real reason though is that the tournament was being used as a pre-season evaluation for the head coach and to Nick’s surprise Trent is playing fair and playing really well convincing Luke that Trent will go out for basketball. Even though Nick doesn’t believe Trent will go out on the first day of tryouts Trent unexpectedly walks into the locker room and gets ready for the practice and works really hard. After this Trent and Nick start to come closer as Trent’s father figure, Steve Clay, asks Nick’s mom if he can bring Trent over at night to practice basketball when he gets off work. When Nick hears about this he is convinced his mom will say no but much to his
Nick did not ask any questions about Matt, like he was expecting, except if Matthew’s parents would be mad about him riding home late.
The book I read is called Long Shot, by Mike Lupica. This book is about a kid named Pedro Morales and his basketball team. He moved from Mexico to the United States (US) as a little kid. He loved to play basketball, but couldn’t decide whether to take full responsibility for the basketball team or his education to make his parents proud especially his dad. He was best friends with a character named Ned.
Have you ever read a book that you are always eager to read, and never wanting to avert your eyes from the book? That’s how I would describe my time reading the book Night Hoops by Carl Deuker. Although I don’t like to read regularly, Night Hoops by Carl Deuker was one of the greatest books I have ever read. I had many things that I liked about the book and many times I felt connected to the main character Nick in the book There were a few things that I didn’t like about the book. The book is about a high school sophomore boy named Nick Abbot who wants to prove that he is good enough to be on the varsity basketball team all the while dealing with his parents' divorce, his eccentric neighbor Trent, and his ineffectual brother Scott.
Dean knocks him to the ground. You just, get this, stand up there, still frozen. At the end of the book, Nick stood up to his fears, for example, "leaving your leg out just enough to trip him face first into the pool." He fought Don. He stood up to his fears and no longer was scared of them.
“The battle you are going through is not fueled by the words or actions of others; it is fueled by the mind that gives it importance” – Shannon L. Alder. The novel, Hoops by Walter Dean Myers, chronicles the life of Lonnie Jackson– a high school student from Harlem with an impressive talent for playing basketball. Lonnie’s goal in life is more than just to become one of the best players to ever hit the court. Lonnie wishes to create a new life for himself– one that is free from the struggles of Harlem streets.
Nick was perfectly sane before he was put through this situation, but between the lies, death, and destruction, it left him with a degraded mental state, and a fleeting grip on
Walter Dean Myers novel Hoops is about a young black boy, Lonnie, who dreams of becoming a professional basketball player, "My game is my fame, and I knew it was together" (2). Coming from a broken home and living in a bad neighborhood, Lonnie sees that becoming a basketball player could be his escape from Harlem. Lonnie has a bad relationship with his mother to the point where he doesn't even sleep in her house sometimes. Instead he sleeps in the hotel he works at. While at the hotel one day Lonnie sees across the street that the gas station was being rob, taking this as an advantage Lonnie runs across the street and steals a case of alcohol planning to sell it.
Nightjohn Even though the United States have improved, we must not forget the horrendous acts of slavery. In the historical fiction novel Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, the topic of slavery is thoroughly explained. Although Gary Paulsen’s novel, Nightjohn, is considered historical fiction, descriptions of brutal punishments, resistance to conditions, and Determination to learn can be corroborated with multiple sources. The book Nightjohn shows the historical accuracy of brutal punishment as if the people who were enslaved were trapped in a cage with a starving tiger.
Throughout these events from the story it is clear that Nick is a
After making the varsity basketball team an act of jealousy is performed by one of his teammates, Will,
Nick notices the billboard and feels he is being watched, but he does nothing to change his actions, just like one would when confronted with their conscience.
As the story begins, Nick says, “...I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me…” (Fitzgerald 1). Although Nick claims he has been taught to not judge others, he does quite frequently. Nick insults Daisy and Tom,
I read the book Night Hoops, by: Carl Deuker. This book is about a boy named Nick that is dealing with some problems that are more than just basketball. He meets a boy names Trent Dawson who he was not too fond of at first, Trent is going through a lot more than Nick is in his home life, so Nick takes Trent under his wing to help keep him out of trouble. But at first Trent seems to resist and says he doesn’t need help. He ends up running out every night with his brother to get into some trouble.
He finds an old clock that dropped on the floor and puts the clock back up and also Tom did not see Nick in the
‘Be Music, Night’ by Kenneth Patchen is an intriguing piece of literary art. A picture is painted of human interaction with Earth immediately. The manner in which humans fall into her beauty and vastness is apparent in even the first lines of Patchen’s poem, but why is this important? “Be music, night, That her sleep may go Where angels have their pale tall choirs” This choir is brought on by our musical mother nature.
