The horror film’s central focus is primarily the family. The family is one of the most understood aspects in the world because it is the connection that everyone is grown up with throughout their life. The way to connect with a person is by dealing with family. The dynamics of family become part of the normality of each culture in the world. In Night of the Living Dead the cannibalistic nature of the androgynous monster becomes part of the world which threatens the social constructs of normality, and stretches family dynamics. This movie starts off as a family outing to the cemetery. The audience sees Barbara and Johnny walking through the cemetery to give someone flowers. Johnny’s attitude and discussion of the person allows the audience to know it is about his father. He doesn’t feel it’s necessary to give his father flowers every year, because he never remembered him. It was also primarily for his mother’s sake. Barbara tells Johnny to take a few minutes and actually try to remember him. This shows that Barbara still …show more content…
One thing about normality is to check to see who the person is before killing them. The police are supposed to defend the people, and only kill when it is necessary. This is not the case in Night of the Living Dead. When the police, and others, come to the house surrounded by ghouls they automatically kill them. They outnumber the ghouls, however they do not check to see if someone is still alive. They assume that they are ghouls and destroy them. There is never an idea that they are actually creating the ghouls. Ben comes up from the cellar as a human, and is killed because he is ‘one of them’. They see his slow stature, and his inability to communicate, and they place him into a category. Their defending of survivors is not evident in their minds. Their sole purpose is to destroy the monsters. This shows that the ghouls will always come back because they are killing before they acknowledge the
Readers can also reflect their own symbolism and emotions onto the story, which makes it more interesting. Now, I will be discussing three symbolic ideas in Night. First will be the word night itself, the second will be the various ways “corpses” are mentioned, and the last will be fire. Night is considered the

The story of The Haunting of Hill House is a horror classic. The book and movie depict this terrifying story in vastly different ways. The movie uses cinematic techniques that a book can not portray: music, acting, and props. The book uses imagery, internal monologue, and suspense to peak fear in the readers. Movies are a different way of portraying a story, but movies aren’t always able to depict everything in the book.
Mise-en-scéne is crucial to classical Hollywood as it defined an era ‘that in its primary sense and effect, shows us something; it is a means of display. ' (Martin 2014, p.XV). Billy Wilder 's Sunset Boulevard (Wilder 1950) will be analysed and explored with its techniques and styles of mise-en-scéne and how this aspect of filmmaking establishes together as a cohesive whole with the narrative themes as classical Hollywood storytelling. Features of the film 's sense of space and time, setting, motifs, characters, and character goals will be explored and how they affect the characterisation, structure, and three-act organisation.
It’s a meeting that ends fatally for the family, but nonetheless changes two characters for the better. The main character, the grandmother, is displayed similarly to many other protagonists that O’Connor had written- selfish, rude, and vain. She and the murderer, called The Misfit, are both used to show that people can change with the help of God’s grace. Symbolism is also prevalent in
In the book, The Lord of the Flies, the boys debate on whether the beast is real or not. The irony throughout the book is based on how the boys are so terrified of there being a fictitious monster on the island that they do not realize that they are the monsters themselves. As the boys begin to act more savagely, their belief of the existence of the beast becomes stronger. Throughout the book, it is clear that the boys are, in fact, the real beast, as evidenced by the spreading hatred, the sexual assaults, and violence. To begin with, the boys’ hatred towards one another grows stronger as the novel progresses, which portrays them as the real beast on the island.
The movie “Sleepers” is about four young boys between the ages 13-14 who commit a serious crime by accident. In this paper I will argue why the boys should be dealt with under the Restorative Justice System, and not under the Retributive Justice System. I will also talk about how they would be dealt with under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). The four boys are clearly very upset with themselves because they let what they thought would be just a fun prank turn into a violent crime.
The Modifier Today is the day; I have out up with this thing for my entire life. I've known it crept behind me, but ignored it. But not tonight, I peered out of my window and saw the thick, dead, and over grown bushes and spotted the familiar purple glowing eyes. I crouched at my bedside and reached under and grasped the end of the titanium bat I got when I was six. I opened bedroom door that creaked as it slowly opened.
