Nolan Ryan was born on January 31, 1947. His parents are Lynn Nolan Ryan Sr. and Martha Lee Hancock Ryan. He was the youngest of six siblings. When he was young he lived in Refugio, Texas and moved to Alvin, Texas. At age twelve the Mets scout, Red Murff, stated that Ryan has the best arm that he had ever seen. In 1965 the New York Mets drafted Ryan in the eighth round. He first started pitching for the Mets on their AAA team in Virginia. In 1966 he was called up to play two games with the Mets. During his short first bit of his MLB career he was the youngest player in the MLB. That same year he was drafted by the military. In 1967 he sustained an elbow injury pitching. He pitched his first full season with the Mets in 1968. Ryan 's only World Series appearance was in 1969 against the Orioles. After winning the World Series, Ryan earned the name, “Ryan Express”. On December 10, 1971, Ryan was traded to the California Angels. Ryan lead the American League with 320 strikeouts. In 1973 Ryan pitched his first no-hitter.
