About a Diehard GENEVIEVE OKEKE Sannu! People are defined by the choices they make and passions that they rear. If that’s what you go by then, I am all about lights, camera and action!. For a cinephile like me, the best act of kindness one could ever do is well, make a film. There is nothing more delightful like learning and living through different perspectives, all on a couch. Just so convenient. And this is the way Nollywood provides all of Nigeria a cinematic experience. The cinema of Nigeria, the third largest film industry in the world, is what makes me feel prouder of my country. I have grown watching movies, videos and plays in Lagos. Our industry truly evolved in the ‘90s. My first memory of a film is the classic Living in bondage, a 1992 path setting drama thriller. I was a cranky six-year-old then and once my mama played its VCD to calm me down. Little did she knew, she had kindled a love story. I make it a point to buy a VCD each week so that whole of the family can bond over some popcorn. We have 1200 films being produced annually in our country that creates buffs like us consequently. With our family it’s not only restricted to being plain audience. My grandfather is a scriptwriter for the vernacular cinema. My uncle is an independent filmmaker which exposes us too a lot of Nollywood. Through him I have learnt that on average it takes $20K-$25K to produce a film. Its a hell of a profitable business as given the market at least 150K to 200K copies of films are sold nationwide. I can imagine the money he is spinning now that he has a sprawling apartment in the Banana Island, Lagos. Then, of course, we rent our farmhouse at times for film shooting.
