One of the non-traditional jobs in westmoreland county is portrayed by Michele Wentzel a female juvenile probation. I was lucky enough to get the chance to interview her. One of the questions she was asked was, Have you ever been hurt or threatened on the job? Michele answered that she was never physically hurt, but threatened many times by students and parents. Another topic discussed was, what is one of the most interesting probation cases you worked? Michele said that a 17 year old student of hers was very smart had a lot of potential ended up dying from the negative life decisions he made. The next question that I asked her was, Do you ever get emotionally attached to your students or clients? Her answer was the cases she gets more attached
I will be covering the best pros and cons that I feel that needs to be argued about probation officers having weapons on them while there on duty active with parolees. A probation officer’s is someone that supervises over people that were convicted of felons or crime. Someone granted a supervised release into the world again instead of prison. Only the judge that grant the charge can determine the eligibility for community supervision. Population is the biggest problem for probation officers having to watch over and control these parolees is dangerous anything could happen.
The client’s current charges are probation violation and larceny $200 or more not from a person. The client has an additional pending case in Salisbury, Maryland for allegedly stealing laptops. The client has been arrested several times relating to his substance abuse (forgery, grand larceny, and possession). The client is currently awaiting sentencing.
In criminal cases, Pretrial release is where a defendant is released from jail while the criminal case is pending. The release usually begins with a bond (criminal-law.com). Pretrial procedures tend to follow the general pattern of civil cases, but with imperative modifications. The functions of the pretrial release decision by attaining defendants for trial which maintains the integrity of the judicial process, the protections of witnesses and victims, as well as the community from interference, threats, or dangers (americanbar.org). The most crucial crimes are felonies which, the punishment is imprisonment for at least a year, usually in a federal or a state penitentiary.
That day she got a case (patient diagnosis) which changed her career forever. Dr. Bailey’s case was a teenage girl who was sick and needed
The original rationale of the rule of the exclusion of the wrongfulness probation has a clear constitutional scope, involves an enhanced warranty for individual rights and seeks to prevent access to process all those evidence to be obtained by the police authorities violated constitutional rights of the people. (Oaks, D. (1970)) One way it has been used in a case was during Boyd V. United States where several cases of plate glass were confiscated from the defendants by federal customs agents due to suspicion that certain documents had been falsified for the purposes of avoiding customs fees or duties. During the course of the proceedings, the defendants were ordered by the judge to produce documents showing the quantity and value of the shipments.
Since police police officers are the first point of contact with youth, Officer Rachel Guzman takes a different look on how to handle youth by using the context of her community to assess the norm (Professor J. Peck, The Police, February 4, 2016) Instead of writing citations against youth, Officer Guzman responds to the kids at school by talking to them and building a friendship, which is the preferred method and essentially comparable to a successful day (Professor J. Peck, The Police, February 4, 2016). Probation officers are at times known to spend more time preparing for a case than interacting with youth, but on the contrary, the probation officers in this film have taken a hands-on approach to build a future for the kids they’re responsible for. Rashaad Horton, a deputy probation officer of the Los Angeles County Probation Department provides intensive supervision to 17-year-old Bernie by using interpersonal skills to assess his day and prevent Bernie from recidivating (Professor J. Peck, Juvenile Probation, February 18, 2016). While the responsibilities of a probation officer consist of a few things such as supervising youth, providing assistance, and job related tasks; Tanesha Lockhart, the deputy probation officer of Christopher has met and exceeded those responsibilities.
Rios records several instances where the boys in the study encounter negative interactions with individuals involved in the criminal justice system like the officers that patrol the streets, the parole officers that criticize and label the boys as deviants, and the juvenile system that threaten and harass the boys. Such
Per the website Study.com (n.d.), Juvenile Probation Officers’ primary job duties are supervising youth who have been in the juvenile justice system. Typically, these juvenile offenders have recently been released from juvenile detention and have returned to live with their families. The purpose of a Juvenile Probation Officer is to prevent the juvenile from reoffending. To prevent reoffending the Juvenile Probation Officer regularly meets with the juvenile and their families to ensure the juvenile is following the guidelines of the courts ("Juvenile Probation Officers | Job Description and Duties," n.d.).
There are times when almost everyone asks what is the purpose of a juvenile probation officer; what role juvenile probation officers have, and what happens when you are on probation under the age of 18 and how a juvenile probation officer works with you. If you or you know someone who is in trouble, knowing how probation works isn’t always a bad thing. The job of a juvenile probation officer is very meaningful. It involves performing several different duties and putting in a fair amount of hours, but it provides a unique opportunity to intervene in the lives of criminal offenders at a time when they may still be open to reform.
Students in the criminal justice department are taught that our main objective in the justice system and our careers is to serve and also protect those involved in our community. For as long as I can remember, my goal in life has been to provide service by protecting and serving those who are close to me. My penchant for service is what eventually led me to the Criminal Justice program at Valdosta State University. This passion for service began at a very young age when my life was turned upside down when I relocated from Puerto Rico to the state of Georgia due to a tragic car accident that led to the end of my father’s life. This sudden change of lifestyle and heartbreak came with an extreme amount of struggle and culture shock not just
many records show that probationers always have the tendency to violate the probation for no reason whatsoever which often leads to countless amount of inconsistent results. However, One would say that it is rather ridiculous to have an individual watching over another individual as a mean to ensure that individual does not do anything stupid or break the law or violate the probation. The court should just put that individual back to jail or
Probation services were first established in 1927. Since then, the system has changed tremendously with developing both centralized and decentralized models. Centralized probation is designed to give authority to the state for probation activities using a state wide administrative body whereas the decentralized model uses agencies administrated by a city or county thereby making it more flexible and better able to respond to incidents. In my opinion, I believe that the decentralized model would work best due to the fact that it would be a lot easier with probation being run by local officials who have a better understanding of the needs of the community and who may be better at assisting people on probation with turning their lives around. Centralized probation from my understanding has too many people involved in the court system to adequately monitor them therefore making it easier for the person on probation to repeat criminal behavior.
Juvenile probation officers perform many functions in their role, therefore, they usually perform six very important functions; 1) conduct intake screening; 2) perform presentence investigations; 3) supervisor and monitor the juvenile offenders by ensuring that they adhere to their probation orders; 4) provide assistance to juvenile offenders placed on probation; 5) perform ongoing assessments on the needs of the juvenile offenders on probation; 6) the probation officers perform a variety of administrative, job-related tasks. Based on my reading of the text and in my opinion, I feel that number five of the six functions would be one of the most important functions of the juvenile probation officer job. (Elrod & Ryder, 2014). I believe that
Examining Problems and Their Solutions in The Parole System The United States of America contains the third largest population in the world, which contradicts the fact that the United States has the largest prison population in the world (Aliprandini, and Finley). The fact that their prison population is so large alludes to the reason they would have a strong parole system. Due to contrary belief, this is not the case.
Probation is an alternative term offered by the court to an offender to serve beside going to prison. It has served an outlet to give back to the community for offenders and there are regulations and guidelines that the offender must follow. With supervision the offender is giving an opportunity to rehabilitate beyond the confinement of the prison and required to meet certain task during the rehabilitation process. “Probation the most frequent disposition for offenders and widely recognized for its advantages (Dawson, 1990)”. Probation effect on the prison overcrowding has been an advantage due to the decline for the cost of probation.
