Introduction: Nonverbal communication is an act of transmitting or generating a message through gestures, facial expression and posture. Another way to say, it is speaking without words. It could be intentional and unintentional. A study by University of California, Los Angeles found that most of the communication is nonverbal. Proximity is one of the categories in nonverbal communication. What is proximity? Proximity indicate nearness, space between individuals which will make more or less comfortable by how individuals perceived. (Teachspatial.org, 2017) Hall built up his theory about proxemics in his book “In The Hidden Dimension”, he mentioned that despite human perception of space is depending on personal sensory but is formed by culture.…show more content…
A friend who exceed the space will caused breaches of our personal space bubbles. (Open.lib.umn.edu, 2013) Unexpected breaches of personal space can causes negative responses and bad consequences too. As the incident that I experienced, Bryan actually could be a good friend but he is not able to handle the distance between us. Hence, in the end Bryan and I become a ‘hi, bye friend’. As a matter of fact, when Bryan is too close to me, I felt my personal bubble has been invaded and every muscle in my body starts to stiff. Proximity is a research that reflects how the space and distance between human influence communication. Moreover, proximity also somehow related to the relationship of human. For instance, relationship between Bryan and I are not close enough to let me allow him to stand with me as near as my intimate friends or families. (McKay, Davis and Fanning, 1995) Personal zone is divided into two subzones, which helps us negotiate close interactions with people we may not be close to interpersonally. Personal zone can be distinguish into outer-personal zone and inner-personal zone. Outer-personal zone is extended from 76 to 120cm which is for people who is not interpersonally close but wanted to talk privately. Without nonverbal communication, receiver cannot decodes what information sender is encoding. Furthermore, it is more than what we see with our naked eyes. Proxemics is like an invisible bubbles that surrounded us. Someone who accidentally or purposely enter to the wrong bubble is like trespassing or breaking and entering into that person’s private territory.
