They used slaves for plantation and labor work, however as Abraham Lincoln disagreed with the expansion of slavery – this impacted on the economy greatly as majority of the society did not agree with his decision. This initiated the civil war, as Southerners and the seven states that seceded from the union did not agree to this, as they would lose more money and their
With the rise of white supremacist groups and the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) the persecution of black Americans increased as their freedom was seen as a threat to white Americans. When ex-slaves would try to flee plantations and set up their own farms, they would be lynched or murdered. In 1867, a former slave owner in Tennessee said that they continued to whip, maim and kill black Americans as if slavery still existed. The amendments and acts did not make the perception of black Americans change, by law they were regarded as equal individuals who deserved equal treatment everywhere, but in society they were still regarded as inferior and animalistic, and laws and legislation in southern states were set up to continue that ideology. The ‘Plessy vs. Ferguson’ Supreme Court case approved the ‘separate but equal’ legal segregation.
Next, when the North had more upper class people due to wealth, it caused the North and South to disagree with how money should be obtained. The South argued that slavery was the answer and the North argued that factories were what had to be done. In one of the documents, it said, “There were 22 million people in the North compared with only 9 million in the South” (Document 7). This means there was more money being made in the North due to more people working in factories versus money being made selling cotton produced by slaves on plantations. The disputes on money were a huge factor in causing the Civil War.
The southern colony and New England Colony had many differences. The New England colony was based more in manufacturing while the southern colony was about agriculture as far as their economy. One big difference is that New England colony didn’t believe in slavery like the southern colonies believed. Slaves and indentured servants were the backbone of the Southern economy. They did much of the labor work for the southern colonies cash crops.
The north and the south had various distinct differences from one another. They have distinct differences in their geography, economy, society, and transportation. The south is much warmer than the north. The north makes money off of factories that make household things, unlike the south. The north has more school and churches than the south.
The Main Causes of the Civil War Instead of saying that the American Civil War was a political contest, it was the result of the economic conflict between the South and North. In other words, the civil war was a war between the North and the South in order to protect their own interests. As we know, In the North, the main economic system was capitalist economy , while the South was mainly the plantation economy. with the development of industry, the North needed more and more worker. But slavery in the South restricted the labor force in the South, and there was little free labor force.
Notably, economic causes were major predicaments during the American civil war. These were the grounds of the civil war that affected the two regions in many ways. Within time, economic variations developed vastly between the two parts of the two regions. The Southern states depended much on farming than in industrialization. After the invention of the Cotton Gin, there as a greater necessity for persons and property, thus this made cotton the chief year’s produce of the South.
One of the most controversial of these is the impact its’ invention had on slavery in America. Instead of slavery becoming obsolete which was the inspiration behind this invention, the cotton gin actually contributed to a massive explosion in the growth of slavery. Whitney thought his invention would decrease the labor involved in production of cotton which in turn would decrease the need for slaves. However, the cotton gin just changed how slaves were used in the production of cotton and did not decrease their need. The cotton gin increased cotton productivity which increased profits for farmers.
There existed reasons other than slavery on behalf of the South 's breakaway. The demonstrations of division in America coexisted many: utopian societies, clashes over public space, backlash alongside immigrants, urban rebellions, black demonstration, and Indian oppositions. America was a separated land in need of change with the South in the biggest demand. The South trusted heavily on agriculture, equally opposed to the North, which was vastly populated and an industrialized union. The South produced cotton, which remained its main cash crop and countless Southerners knew that hefty reliance on slave labor would damage the South ultimately, but their forewarnings were not regarded.
People in the North believed that slavery was inherently evil and inhumane, but the South disagreed, believing that slaves were property and leaving all possible work on the plantations, up to them. This then led to the great Abolitionists Movement as many people started to view slavery as evil thanks to people such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The next cause of the war was the new expansion throughout the U.S. This caused new states to have to choose between the Union and Confederacy, which only caused for hate and strive between the two. Another conflict was Bleeding Kansas.
