have always had a passion for international travel and a curiosity for investigating other cultures. since i was a child, my favorite game was to watch people and guess their stories. when I was 12 years old i moved to Qatar for 3 years with my family. it was my first encounter living in a culturally diverse community. suddenly the game became even more intriguing for me. as if it was elevated to a whole new level. i started visually analyzing people with entirely different backgrounds, different ethnicities and different ways of interaction.I started to watch films and visual arts from different parts of the world in an attempt to provide me with insight into a country’s cultural values, beliefs, heritage, and visual elements that make the country unique.

The article “whose culture is it?” written by Kwame Anthony Appiah published in 2012, contains factual and suggestive content towards the preservation and importance of historical antiquities. The author discusses the positioning of cultural antiquities based on the ability of civilizations to preserve them. As examples were revealed, various acts have been taken accordingly; to legally provide the antiquities the safest solutions to preserve them. Furthermore, Appiah also discusses that some artifacts that belong to the artist, or contributors should be considered as universal art. There is an old Moorish proverb that reads, “He who does not travel, does not know the value of man.” That quote resonates deep within me because I have a yearning to use my education to empower those in need. In order to do so, I need to see and experience the world outside of the one I am accustomed to. Curiosity is one of the traits that define the person that I am; because of this trait I always ask questions about the world around me and the people I meet. This is one of the driving forces behind my desire to venture outside of the United States to learn a new language and culture.
Carnegie Mellon University is a place where innovation and creativity prosper at a dizzying rate and has a seemingly never-ending list of opportunities for a prospective design student such as myself. Design has always been appealing to me, shaping the things we come across in our daily lives and turning our current reality into a better one. Everything we come across has been thought of, drafted, redrafted, scrapped, drafted again - all until it becomes tangible. It's certainly a process, no doubt, but I've been captivated by all the care that's taken regarding design, and it's something I myself would like to be a part of.

Due to my personal goals and values, I chose Queen’s University as I knew it was the place I could grow and thrive. I selected Queens University because I value challenges very highly (exhibit C). The growth mindset shows me, when an individual can overcome great challenges in both academic and social areas the individual learns multiple useful skills such as resilience and handwork (Yeager, Scott, Dweck). I knew Queen’s would challenge me both academically and socially, and it has thus far. I find fitting in harder than ever before and adjusting to the work load difficult.
Participating in this program will help me tremendously in this process by providing not only educational insights, but real life experience.

I want to be able to apply my learnings in real-world scenarios and make a positive impact on individuals. To further develop my talents, I plan to develop my adaptability skill by engaging in extracurricular activities that challenge me to adapt to different environments and circumstances. This theme will help me to navigate the ever-changing landscape of college life and ultimately contribute to my overall success.
Graphic designer, Louise Fili, grew up in an Italian-American family in New Jersey and fell in love with the homeland of her parents at the age of 16 years. Since then, her passion for design, typography and Italian food has influenced her career as a designer. Fili went to study studio arts at Skidmore College but instead found graphic design, as she states in an interview “I went to Skidmore College where, if you couldn’t paint, they told you that you were graphically oriented. That’s when I found out what graphic design was.”. Later in the 1970’s, she completed her final semester at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the age of 25 she become senior designer for Herb Lubalin.
The definition of the concept of Cultural Heritage has developed with history. At present, it doesn’t end at monuments and collection of objects.
