Warren Brodey in his work has defined family as a group of people who share common birth, who are joined up by marriage or who share a kinship. Also, the term family has been used by different people to refer to those groups that share a common interest. It has used to refer to a certain group of people who for example have been brought together by a particular mission even though these people may not share any biological relation. The term family has been evolving over time. The history and the development of this term family explain how the structure of what constitutes a family has also changed.

Due to the development of same sex marriage, today different couples who belong to the same sex are coming up and forming a family through marriage. There are countries in the world that have so far legalized same sex marriage and have given such couple the green light to form a family. Subsequently, these couples are adopting children who they bring up as their own. The children are growing up knowing that these are their real parents. The family can be termed as nuclear family with two parents who are of the same sex and the children who they have adopted and who do not share blood relation with their parents or with each other. It is a new kind of nuclear family that shows how the development and the evolving of the term family have led to types of families acquiring new meanings. In the last century, such were types of families were not there. That was a period where our grandmothers would not think of such kind of a family. However, today it is being experienced. It is important to however note that not all the countries in the world have allowed such a family to exist. It remains to be seen how far the countries will go in allowing same sex marriage and how the union of two people with the same sex will go in affecting the definition and the composition of a
