I agree with my groups decision about what should be a priority in the building on strengths program. I think working with partners like a Nuestra Comunidad will increase resources and funding. The Nuestra Comunidad provides mental health and substance abuse resources and assistance to the Latino Hispanic community in Mississippi State (Hunting, K., & Gleason, B. L, 2012). More funding will help support the needs of Latino Hispanic community. Nuestra Comunidad mission is to provide the best quality help of mental health and substance abuse treatments and give resources (Hunting, K., & Gleason, B. L, 2012). Nuestra Comunidad works in collaboration with consumers, university partners, and local, state and national agencies for funding and resources for the Latino Hispanic community (Hunting, K., & Gleason, B. L, 2012). In November 2004 Nuestra Comunidad received a grant for the program (Hunting, K., & Gleason, B. L, 2012). The grant helped with funding for the Nuestra Comunidad program. …show more content…
The economic recession had an impact on the entire country. Latino students and their families faced hardships and the likelihood of losing their jobs because of the closing of the chicken plant. Nuestra Comunidad was not spared the blow of the economic downturn (Hunting, K., & Gleason, B. L, 2012). Building on Strengths program was also affected by the financial lost and resources that were also lost (Hunting, K., & Gleason, B. L, 2012). The program had faced a down fall. The agency relied on public financing for its operations and those dollars were drying up quickly. Advisors to the program strongly recommend that additional attention focus on the impact of the program activities necessary to secure future funding (Hunting, K., & Gleason, B. L,

Stephanie Strom, writer for the New York Times, announces that “Ms. Switzer was determined to make an opportunity, as she calls it, out of the philanthropy that rose from the ashes that blanketed the school.” Anna Switzer, the public school’s principal, created a program called Project Giveback that educates children that they are strong enough to help others now that they have been aided themselves. The students would send stuffed animals to hospitals, write letters to their helpers in other states, and help raise money for different organizations. This initially limited effort that came out of a principal and her students demonstrates America can prevail through one of its worst moments in history through the help of one another.

Unity for Chicanos came in the form of an idea, of a dream, called El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán (The Spiritual Plan of Aztlán). ‘Plan of Aztlán’ became one the Chicanos signature ideas, this ‘Plan’ “sought to connect Chicanos to their indigenous past while… reminding them of the colonial implications of the Mexican-American war.” The ‘Plan’ become a method through which Mexican-Americans could be united through their shared ancestry and culture. Simultaneously, the Young Lords pushed for unity through a much more radical avenue. The Lords aimed to liberate their fellow Puerto Ricans and thus “rejected the established norms and American values…
Although El Plan de Santa Barbara outlined the Mexican American curriculum that would best serve the Chicano population as well as the community, the Chicano Coordinating Council on Higher Education highlights problems that Mexican American students and faculty face to this day. In the Chapter titled Organizing and Instituting Chicano Programs On-Campus, the proposal mentions that “[o]ne target where hostility can focus most damagingly is funding.” Legislation in conservative states, such as Texas

When working with families it is imperative to look at the strengths side of the social assessment in order to build a working relationship with a particular family. Families can become resistant to services and treatment when negative connotations are being tossed at them and nothing positive is being reiterated. When working with the strengths perspective we are trying to eliminate problems and/or risks factors and create an alternative solution for the problems at hand (Saleebey, 51). Building on strengths makes it possible for resiliency of the child and family in the future. When assessing Brandon, his strengths were; family, education, and goal orientation.
The Foundation is looking at organizations that collaborate and strengthen systems of care. Preference is given to Baltimore, MD communities for the veterans. Eligible organizations are committed to mental health and the elimination of barriers, have the ability to demonstrate long term outcomes. The eligible organization must have an (501)( c )(3) and has existing services for veterans. I am confident this RFP is worth pursuing because the grant proposal includes the organizations eligibility and demonstrates various preferences aligned with the Foundation and the goals of grant seeker (Ward, 2012).
“The common denominator all Latinos have is that we want some respect. That 's what we 're all fighting for” - Cristina Saralegui. Judith Ortiz Cofer published the article, “The Myth of the Latin Woman,” where she expresses her anger towards stereotypes, inequality, and degradation of Latin Americans. Cofer explains the origins of these perceived views and proceeds to empower Latin American women to champion over them. Cofer establishes her credibility as a Latin American woman with personal anecdotes that emphasize her frustration of the unfair depiction of Latinos in society.
She has made parent involvement with schools and engagement in their children’s education a key focal point to boost struggling public school’s annual ratings. Differing from Mayor de Blasio’s approach of attempting renovation, the Bloomberg administration previously dealt with the underperforming schools directly in identifying ineffective personnel and inefficient administration and thus replacing them. Instead, the de Blasio administration has committed an estimated one million dollars directed towards organizing volunteers to actually go door-to-door to about 35,000 of the parents of these public school children. These hired people would inform these parents of the new changes to the school and ultimately encourage them to take on a more engaged role in their children’s
