The process of downloading Skype and initiating a conversation was a new skill I had to learn, and potentially skill I may have to walk a patient through someday soon in order to provide care. This shows nurses need to be open to learn new skills.
NUR 529 Health Policy I learned how to be a successful advocate for nurses and our patients. In addition, we must be continually willing learn about new and upcoming health policies. The assignments that highlighted this outcome are Discussion Forum 4 and Writing Assignment 1 Health Policy Legislation. They introduced me to GovTrack.us, Congress.gov and njleg.state.nj.gov. Now I am actually tracking bills and my local legislators. This will support my awareness of changes in health policies.

The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act laid out the groundwork for a program designed to equip hospitals and medical practices around the country with electronic health record systems by providing financial incentives (p. 245). However, in some markets such as long-term care facilities the transition to electronic system has been slow. Professional nurses whose careers are in long-term care in our nation will play major role in getting electronic health systems into these settings. It will take nurse advocating for these systems and continuation of research showing evidence that supports widespread adaptation of these systems, but nurse united under one cause, best practice can make anything happen.
Nurses and physicians need to express themselves in a clear and precise manner, their message should rely on verification and collaborative problem solving. Creating value through collaboration has been a topic of concern over the last 50 years as the spending in health care has increased. The goal is to provide quality and affordability and because of past efforts, enrollment increased drastically while it created a shortage of providers. Integrating behavioral and medical health has not been properly addressed due to stigmas and lack of education. Behavior health is more common today and costly. In efforts to integrate and improve patient outcomes and provider experiences there are many ways to achieve this goal such as train medical providers, train behavioral practioniers and embed behavioral providers in primary care settings.

My knowledge in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) continues to expand as I progress through the DNP program. The knowledge I have attained while in the study of the DNP I and DNP II is priceless. For example, recognizing stakeholders and utilizing networking has helped me to progress on my DNP project (Gokenbach, 2012). I also have a better understanding as well as the purpose of a DNP project. My mentors have been great in directing me in remaining on the right track.
Therefore, practice and research needs to be clearly identified and be kept separated because they represent two different acts. When a patient gives healthcare professionals the permission to “practice”, it is solely for the purpose to improve their health outcomes. By accepting and allowing practice, it does not constitute an agreement be participate in a research. It would be crossing the boundaries to perform a research when the healthcare professionals were expected to improve patient’s well-being.
