This course has expanded our knowledge on the causation and effects of numerous diseases that impact the field of epidemiology. A disease that deserves utmost attention is Chlamydia as it severely affects women. This case study is enabling us to explore the effectiveness and efficiency of tests that may be used to curb the problem of this sexually transmitted disease. Chlamydia is very prevalent globally and it is feared by many and yet still there are so many unreported cases of the disease. According to research from the CDC, Chlamydia is a common STD that affects both men and women and can cause serious damage to the reproductive system of women and furthermore lead to potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy presenting a problem for women who …show more content…
A false positive deserves serious attention. There is stigma associated with obtaining the STD and CDC requires this to be reported as well as the sexual partners deserve a right to be alerted. This itself can cause further issues in the case that one sexual partner has it and the other doesn’t then one is led to think about possible infidelity. It is a very embarrassing yet anxious period when a person awaits the results of Chlamydia testing especially when the result is a false positive. The prevalence of Chlamydia in women is 25% and 7% in men which shows that it is three times higher in females. In the case of a false positive, individuals will get a scare and once individuals get tested, the information derived would be valuable as the positive predictive value helps individuals to find out the probability of the population of the population of interest that gets the disease. This will help medical personnel stop the disease in its tracks. Therefore, point of care testing was developed to allow for more accurate testing of persons: “Point of care testing allows patient diagnoses in the physician’s office, the hospital or the home and the results are timely and allow rapid treatment of the patient” (NIH, 2013). It will encourage patients to get tested and prevent any fear associated with getting tested due to the stigmas associated with attaining the infection and the history of false positives noted in the
They were promised free medical care, and told they were being treated for "bad blood" (Kronenwetter, 2023). The scientists lied to their participants and told them they were being treated for a disease they didn’t even have. They manipulated them by telling the participants that they would get free medical care after participating in the study. The participants did not know they will be given the syphilis disease.
Do we want to take this right away simple because there is no treatment? Family and career planning may be the motivation behind an individual’s decision to be tested. It is the individual choice
Group 2 Hela Essay Henrietta Lacks was a normal, young African American woman who lived a simple life by taking care of her family, including her husband (and also her first cousin) Dale, and their five children. Not long after she delivered her fifth child, Henrietta developed an aggressive cervical cancer caused by the sexually transmitted disease, HPV, which quickly caused her to lose her fight and pass away, yet her death and cancer cells also had a new beginning in the aspect of science: her cells taken from a biopsy continued to divide and became one of the most important cell lines in medical history.
3. Scientists believed the newly infected individuals produced quality specimen and it was impossible to detect the microbe once the infected individual started to recover. Scientists wanted to compare patients blood antibody test from early in their illness to the end of their illness in which they found that
Dissemination Plan Internal. To best disseminate Braden screening internally, it is important to include all acute care staff nurses, charge nurses, nurse administrators, case managers, unlicensed assistive personnel and involved hospital administrators. It is also important to include the acute care physicians, so that they are aware of the problem and intervention on a collaborative basis. A series of lunch and learn sessions, where staff members from each acute care shift can be exposed to the problem (including the prevalence of HAPUs in the acute care setting), the Braden Scale Screening solution, as well as an overview of benefits, costs and savings. This would be an opportunity to gain rapport with staff, and gain traction with early-adopters who will be key to ensuring a culture of taking the intervention seriously, as well as following the protocols and reporting procedures.
Management of Care Case Study Josepha is working on a medical surgical unit with three other RNs and one LPN. There is also a male and a female patient care tech. Josepha has been a nurse for four months, and after completing two months of orientation she takes a full assignment as a registered nurse. Josepha feels that the assignments she receives are not always fair, as she tends to get the most challenging clients.
In fact, the men were not provided enough information to properly consent to the experiment. Even when the cure for syphilis was discovered in 1947, researchers did not offer the medication to their subjects. Consequently, researchers abused their powers by recruiting test subjects that were unaware of the real purpose of their study. In this scenario, the medical knowledge of the researchers gave them power and an unjust advantage over their ignorant subjects. Researchers proved their corruption when this study, originally projected to last only 6 months, lasted instead for 40
It is defined as а standard group of criteria to recognize if the person has а disease or not. Standardized case definitions information will be used to compare the University of Chicago Medicine with other facilities (benchmarking), to monitor the infection rate over time, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the Clostridium difficile prevention strategies. There are two national Clostridium difficile surveillance that is used in acute care setting, the National Health Safety Network (NHSN), а division from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Clinical Practice Guidelines from the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). The University of Chicago Medicine will use the NHSN for national comparison (benchmarking). In case of plan failure, the University of Chicago Medicine will repeat the same steps of plan objectives as а plan B and auditing each step to make sure that plan is applied
Evidence based practice has not only shown us what leads to an increase or decrease in STD but it has also
The PHS (Public Health Service) department recruited local doctors and nurses who would not treat the men with syphilis (Clinton). They had white physicians within their department administer the study (Batten). There were 400
Eventually, the researchers cooperated a control group in their study. The control group consisted of the men that were previously involved in the study last winter. The researcher selected two hundred of the men that were between certain ages and examine them. Also, this group of men did not have syphilis. Although, some of the men had to be turned down because their test result were positive for syphilis.
Introduction Nursing is known as professional discipline (Donaldson & Crowley, 1978). Nurses shortage is one of the significant issues in current nursing in Singapore and also in other countries. According to Buchan et al 2008, nurses shortage has a significant connection with a country’s historical staffing levels, country 's resources and it also estimates the demands for healthcare. Nursing shortages are unmeasureble, and they may be defined as professional capacity standards from an economical view.
Second, the multiple tests were not possible as FDA approved one test, herpes, with Edison, which did not need FDA approval as it is not for marketing purposes (2). Lastly, Holmes’ big plan was to increase accessibility of the blood testing centers. But, it could not happen as Walgreens dropped the partnership after Theranos was under investigation by FDA and received warning letters and complaints(3). Hopefully one day, the nanotainer gets used the way Holmes
This can be tested by simply mixing the serum of suspected individual which contain the antibodies with the antigens of specific bacteria the accumulation of clumps confirms the presence of particular bacterial infection.[2] This test can be performed in various ways including slide agglutination reaction, tube agglutination reaction, indirect agglutination inhibition reactions etc. Another important practical application involves blood group test of
