On the other hand, ‘Transactional’ leaders are focused on tasks, makes decisions quickly and goal oriented however, they do not identify with shared values of the team (O’Connor and Carlson,2016). Another characteristic of Transformational leaders is, they are, motivational, empowering and inspirational to others to identify and pursue a long-term vision in relation to organisational goals and individual personal development plans (Brewer et al,2016). As leaders they demonstrate democratic approach and gain trust through listening, responding, empowering, empathising and developing relationship with their team(Giltinane,2013). Therefore, one can argue that, transformational leadership is fundamental to nursing, because of its influence on a safety culture, staff and patient satisfaction (Fischer,2016). However, one leadership style by its own is not effective at all times. Leaders should be able to adapt to different leadership trait depending on the situations. Transformational leaders may need to exhibit some transactional leadership skills to perform short term goals within the team in an organisation (Mannix et al,2013). In crisis situations, transactional leadership is the best healthcare leadership model to use. It is a task-focused leadership style. However, in nursing this can lead to a non-holistic approach to patient care (Giltinane,2013). As these are the two-preferred leadership style in healthcare settings, the author found herself in a positive ground in terms of Leadership style. But certainly, she needed to improve her skills by identifying her development needs which in turn will help her to become an efficient
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
Lee, regarding about challenges in changes processes, as nurse leaders, we need to think outside our own silos, research how others are doing it and maybe change it and apply it to our needs. This is very similar to my topic of reverse innovation, which is getting ideas from the poor and applying it to the more developed economies (DePasse & Lee, 2013). Your question asked, how can you help your patients seek healthcare options that will meet their needs and stay cost effective? In my area of transplant, we have a separate department that handles insurance, Transplant Patient Access Services (TPAS) representatives.
This essay is going to reflect on my own management and leadership style in delivering patient care. It will discuss the effectiveness of the other leadership and management style within the multi-disciplinary team and its impact on delivering patient care. I will use as an example, my previous experience back home as a nurse and compare it to my current experience in the United Kingdom (UK). This will show my strength and weakness as well as my new learning skills, which have changed my practice. I will be using Driscoll model of reflection (2007) to guide my thought and refine my ideas.

HCIS 725 Leadership in Healthcare Practice Kirsten Blatchford Contrasting Leadership Models Leadership models are developing to adapt to the changing needs of people and the surrounding environment (Dye, 2017). It is important for leaders to be flexible and take part in change to guide their teams and organizations to success. Over time, the theories of leadership have grown and taken different forms. Transformational leadership align with my participative style because engaging with others will bring a higher level of motivation between employees and strives on mutual growth (Huber, 2014). Studies have shown that transformational leadership leads to a positive work environment, which promotes work satisfaction, and psychological commitment in nurses (Gillet, Fouquereau, Bonnaud-Antignac, Mokounkolo, & Colombat, 2013). The systems theory is an integration of various concepts that interact with each other to better achieve a goal in a positive way. This management system aligns with my participative leadership style due to everyone working toward a goal, but taking into consideration that any deviation between the concepts can affect the entire system as a whole (Huber, 2014). This management style also helps make positive future plans by involving the staff to give feedback and input to identify how effective a goal is working.
Nursing is a profession that started as part of the larger medical field. Transactional Leadership is based on the principles of the social exchange theory, in which an individual would expect to give and receive benefits or rewards when engaging in a social interaction (Sullivan, 2012). The interaction will cease if one or both person decides that the exchange of benefits and rewards are no longer worthwhile. Transactional Leadership theory also focus on the task that need to be carried out and makes sure they are done the right way as compared to Transformational Leadership theory which focus on staff empowerment (Marquis and Huston, 2015). A nurse manger in a department or ward is a good example of Transactional Leadership theory.

Leadership in nursing practice means to me not only possessing the interpersonal skills to help other nurses achieve their highest potential and inspiring them to work together to provide quality care to patients, but also involving them to become passionate, innovative, confident, and decisive in what they do and the care they provide. The Professional Roles and Values course taught me tremendously about applied leadership. I learned that nurses are considered natural leaders even though being a leader in the field can be difficult and challenging. Under those circumstances, I am
