Introduction:
This assignment will explore the Roper, Logan and Tierney model used in first clinical placement and will explain how it helped to guide nurses to focus on the fundamentals of patient care. Patient dignity is upheld by using this model following the principles outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Midwives as will be discussed.

It was outlined in the ward that this model enabled nurses to gain an extensive assessment in conjunction with the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating and that the nursing diagnosis further expanded on medical care and assessment within the multidisciplinary team. According to Henderson the role of the nurse was to:
Assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge (Henderson, 1966, p. 15).
This provided a prime example of how the RLT model helped to guide nursing practice in the ward studied. This enabled the nurses to provide extensive care and techniques, including comfort strategies and measures to achieve such. An example of how this model guided nursing practice on the ward studied
Although Timmins and O’Shea (2003) argued that the RLT model is now outdated and focuses largely on assessment solely around the ADL’s similarly to a physical checklist. It also clarifies nursing values and development and allows for accountability. It involves patients in co-ordinated nursing care (Feo and Kitson, 2016). The Roper, Logan and Tierney model helps nurses to focus on patient care by following the fundamental rights of maintaining independence of the ADL’s without diminishing dignity. Recognising that their knowledge, attitudes and behaviour may be influenced by biological, psychological, sociocultural, environmental and politico-economic factors and respecting their decisions in such. Overcoming and preventing illness to maintain independence is the nurses key focus in delivering patient care which follows the direction of the RLT model of nursing (Roper, Logan and Tierney, 2001).
A recent study by Griffiths (2008) showed the fundamentals of patient care may have been lost and patient focus was diminished. He explained that nursing had become too technical due to the healthcare environmental crisis and the focus was taken away from the fundamentals of patient care. Although the ward on clinical placement was evidently over stretched, the fundamentals of patient care was still upheld due to the regiment implementation of the RLT model of nursing. Initial assessment allowed nurses to plan and implement measures from early admission which inevitably made all aspects nursing care
