Research problem, hypothesis & conceptual framework
1. 1. RESEARCH PROBLEM, HYPOTHESIS & CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK Meghana Sudhir
2. 2. Introduction Formulation of the research problem and developing hypothesis are key preliminary steps in the research process. A problem is a question posed for solutions.
3. 3. Sources of problems There are three main sources for locating a problem or topic. They are Experience : The nurses’ every day experience provides a rich supply of problems for investigations. For the beginning researchers in particular experience is often the most compelling source for topics .
4. 4. Sources of problems: Nursing literature: Ideal for research project; often come from reading the nursing literature. The beginning

5. Sources of problems: Theory : The third major source of problems lies in the theoretical system and conceptual schemes which have been developed in nursing and other related disciplines. If a researcher decides to base a research project exclusively on a theory, deduction from the theory must be developed. Example : Levine’s (1969) conceptual frame work on nursing which concerns conservation. Seley’s (1956) theory of adaptations to stress.
6. 6. Steps in Developing and Refining Research Problems Selecting a topic Narrowing the topic Evaluating research problem
7. 7. The development of a research problem is essentially a creative process dependent upon imagination, insight and ingenuity. Developing and Refining Research Problems
8. 8. Developing and Refining Research Problems Researchers generally begin with an interest in some broad topic area such as pain management, family communication patterns, self-care patterns of elders or management of urinary incontinence.
9. 9. Developing and Refining Research Problems Usually the research focuses on the dependent variable of the study, the variable that will be predicted or explained through its relationship to the independent variable.
10. 10. Brainstorming with teachers, advisors or colleagues may provide valuable feedback that helps the researcher to focus on a specific problem

17. Statement of the problem Example “ A study to compare the knowledge and practice of post natal mothers regarding neonatal care from selected urban and rural settings of Bangalore”.
18. 18. Objectives To assess the knowledge of postnatal mothers regarding the neonatal care To describe the practices followed in their family regarding neonatal care To determine the association between knowledge and practices of neonatal care To determine association of knowledge with selected variable To compare the knowledge and practice of neonatal care between urban and rural mother
19. 19. Clarifying the objectives (a). Focus on objective one Knowledge of postnatal mothers regarding neonatal care, breast feeding, cord care, prevention of infection and maintenance of warmth (b). Focus on objective two Practice of family regarding neonatal care (c). Selected characteristic of respondent Age, Religion, Education, Occupation, Type of family, Income etc.
20. 20. HYPOTHESIS A hypothesis is a prediction about the relationship between two or more variables. A hypothesis thus translates a quantitative research question in to a precise prediction of expected outcomes. The hypothesis is an important part of the scientific method and research
1. Create an applied research project. a. Identify what type of applied analysis you would be conducting (process evaluation, outcome evaluation, needs assessment, or combination of any of these). This is a needs assessment analysis that targeted an old model of issuing identification cards to abuse victims trying to leave their abuser, which was problematic because of the time it took to issue the cards and the methods it employed requiring the victims to prove who they are. This assessment, evaluation of an old government model was to determine if the new model was more effective than the old model for this particular program and if the officials tasked with issuing new and or replacement identification to the women and their families
Which of the following is a characteristic of a good hypothesis? A.Original idea not based observation B.Raises further questions C.Should be testable D.Contains more than two variables. 43. Which of the following gland regulate the function of other glands in the endocrine
Study was focus on vulnerable mothers (young, less educated, and/or unmarried), and the results show that early and adequate use of care improved for both racial groups, and racial disparities in prenatal care use have been markedly reduced, except for some young mothers. Gortmaker, S. (1979). The effects of prenatal care upon the health of the newborn. American Journal of Public Health July 1979: Vol.
1. Define research, nursing research, and evidence-based practice, and describe the purposes of research in implementing an evidence-based practice. Research is investigating and studying of materials and sources to establish facts and reach new conclusions or to report knowledge about something. Research can also mean to validate something that already exists based on some kind of theory.
As a first time mom going into motherhood can be a frightening and joyful moment. That leads myself and many other mothers into being anxious;experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. Many first time moms are anxious about giving birth. It 's common being anxious during childbirth, it a norm for motherhood. Over the years the anxious has changed for childbirth.
INTRODUCTION: This contextual project consists of 10 concept from the block 1 study with the title “Research and Nursing Research”. The meaning of each concept will be clarified, critically analyzed and applied to social context, personal life and current professional life. The usefulness of the concept to the current world will also be explained.
Analyze the problem. iii. Refine the problem. • Utilize these three steps as you define the researchable questions. III.
Homelessness is more than just the absence of a permanent address. It is a condition in which a large, growing percentage of people in the United States and most likely the rest of the world find themselves. It means being cut off from relatives, social groups, and community organizations and losing a sense of belonging to society (Brown&Casey, 2014). Homelessness in America is a long-standing and pervasive social issue. Health care, in particular, poses a challenge as homeless individuals struggle to obtain even the most basic care.
293 women were interviewed (305 pregnant women originally conducted the questionnaire) three months after delivery giving time to obtain results for the postpartum period. Considering that the type of delivery could be a possible factor that influences research data when it comes to interpretation, the researchers consulted with the women about the type of
This literature review will be covering the topic on research paradigms. There are three major paradigms in the research paradigms which are the positivist paradigm research, interpretivist paradigm research and critical paradigm research. Each research paradigm has its own strengths and effectiveness due to their unique features which are specific to their particular approach as well as weaknesses. All researchers have their own beliefs and methods while conducting a research. Therefore, the ways of research studies conducted are vary.
In order for the theory to work, the nurse must recognize both the patient’s situation and environment (Selanders, 2010). • The theory is broad in scope, which is applicable to abundance of nursing processes. e. Strengths and Weaknesses • Weaknesses: o The assumption that the disease is a direct result of the environment.
Because of False beliefs, customs and attitude of the mother tend to wean the child late where the babies are landing up in severe problem. Hence due to different points of concerns this study has planned to know the mean age and influencing various factors with complementary feeding. Material & Methods: This study was a prospective interventional study conducted in the Department of Pediatrics at North Indian Hospital.
We are able to solve issues within our practice by first being able to identify the problem or issue. As a nurse, you may be able to address the issue within the hospital by helping the patient with deficit, education and
Research philosophy Research philosophy lay down the background of how researchers understand the world, the choice of research philosophy reflect our knowledge, experiences, preconceptions, and research capability. Thus our knowledge, experiences and etc., which underpin the philosophy choice, will determine our research paradigm, strategy, design and method. (Saunders et al., 2009, p. 128-129).
The arrival of a new baby, especially the first always marks a new beginning for a mother. It comes with a lot of challenges more so if the mother is less knowledgeable about baby care. Take such as cleaning the baby for the first time, or feeding, it is not easy. The baby is still fragile and slippery and needs a special care. But if the mother is not ready for all these, or maybe, does not have any knowledge on what to do, the baby’s life might be endangered since the baby needs a special care which only the mother can give.
