Malnutrition and unintentional weight loss contribute to a progressive decline in health, reduced physical and cognitive functional status, increased utilization of health care services, premature institutionalization, and increased mortality. Many health care practitioners inadequately address the multifactor issues that contribute to nutritional risk and to malnutrition. A common assumption is that nutritional deficiencies are an inevitable consequence of aging and disease and that intervention for these deficiencies are only minimally effective. The macro-mineral that I am interested in learning about is calcium because the body does not produce calcium, so we have to obtain it from food sources. However, being lactose intolerant makes me vulnerable to have lower calcium intake than the average recommended, which is why I compensate that by taking calcium supplements.

I never received anything. He just said “try and make sure she has a well balanced diet…” They were frustrated when they found that practitioners were unable to give specific advice using terms such as ‘surprise’ and ‘disappointment’ to describe their experiences (6). An online survey on weaning timing in UK found that only 39% of respondents rated health visitor advice as most influenced their weaning decisions.

Nutrition is how food affects the health of the body. The body has to function and remain healthy by taking in macronutrients and micronutrients. Failure to do so leads to ill-health and disease. Everyone, throughout life requires the same nutrients but in differing quantities. The factors that determine how much we need are: age, gender, size, exercise and whether one is in good health or, perhaps, has a medical condition.

People who has problems with dementia may also be at risk of mal-nutrition. People with dementia rely on others to help them to organize their day to day life such as preparing their meals. People with dementia are at risk of mal-nutrition because they may not be physically able to provide themselves with a balanced diet, there may also be the issue that they are not able to remember whether they have eaten and therefore decide not to make themselves.
To begin with, Pollan believes that people should consume food instead of nutrients because nutrients are being overvalued in the current society. However, many people want to maintain health through their diets. As Hippocrates’s famous injunction states, “Let food be thy medicine” (Pollan 3). Statistics reveal that 15.4 percent of children of mothers with no education suffered from chronic malnutrition, while 9.4 percent and 4.7 percent in children of mothers with secondary or higher education levels respectively (Acevedo & Menendez, 2006).
