Obesity has increased so much it can be said to have replaced tobacco as the number one preventable cause of diseases in America (Hall). Obesity is a condition characterized by the excessive gathering and storage of fat in the body. In recent years, the number of people diagnosed with obesity has increased dramatically. In the article “Washington: Nearly Four in Ten U.S. Adults Now Obese,” it notes that “almost four out of ten adults and 18.5 percent of kids aged two to nineteen now meet the clinical definition of obesity, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” Obese people are commonly seen battling with basic tasks like walking, climbing stairs, or even bending over, and that is a hard way to live a life. People who are overweight are also more likely to suffer from life-altering diseases, including heart disease. Fortunately, losing weight can diminish the odds of some of those diseases. It is not only size of the person that gets affected, but also the organs such as your heart. It is known that obesity is the underlying cause of various diseases such as diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and so many more. In the article “Dangers of Obesity to Be Discussed,” it reports that “based on international studies, people suffering from obesity and BMI of more thirty will have more than seventy percent increased prevalence coronary artery disease.” In addition, the entire weight of an obese person is carried by the bones and due to the excess weight, it can cause the person’s movement to be limited. Having said that, the more a person is unable to move, the more weight they will put on, further increasing their chance of developing chronic diseases. It is simple, the more obese someone becomes, the more likely they are to develop diseases, and in return, the bigger healthcare bills
The rate of obesity has just been increasing due to many
It calls for an intervention within the obese individual to change their weight in order to avoid health implications such as heart disease. When physicians typically label a patient as obese, they are giving a prognosis that this patient may have a later disease such as cardiovascular disease associated with their weight.
Today about one in three children in the United States are obese, and is the number one cause of death in America. Childhood obesity is now more concerning to people than drug abuse and smoking. Obesity not only has disgusting physical effects, it also will have negative changes to a person’s personality. Even though many people are aware of the problems obesity brings, there still has been at least a 50% increase in obese people since 1980. Obesity will cause extreme health problems and possibly death if people don’t change their diets, activity levels, or emotional needs towards food.
One of the main causes is the abundance of unhealthy food options. Fast food restaurants and convenience stores that sell highly processed and calorie-dense foods are ubiquitous, making it easy for people to consume more calories than they need. Moreover, these foods are often cheaper than healthier options, which can be a significant barrier for individuals on a tight budget. Another factor that contributes to the obesity epidemic in America is the sedentary lifestyle that many people lead.
Obesity is an ever-growing epidemic in the United States. Weights have been rising in the United States throughout the twentieth century, but the rise in obesity since 1980 is fundamentally different from past changes. (Cutler, Glaeser and Shapiro) Though it is not entirely clear what is to blame many scientists and researchers have a theory. The rise of obesity in the U.S. can be contributed to high priced fruits and vegetables, low costing processed foods, widespread increase in poverty, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Most people understand the condition has to having an unhealthy body weight and lack an adequate amount of daily physical activity. Currently, there has been a trend in the number of individuals who are affected by obesity. Data shows that in the United States alone that about 13.7 million children are considered obese (American Obesity Foundation, n.d.). On a global scale, data has shown that about 500 million adults are defined as obese (Obesity Prevention Source, 2016). This data is alarming because of the great number of individuals who are affected by this condition.
This statistic is very startling because obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death. This is a very important topic to me because
That amounts to 16.5 percent of the country’s medical care expenses” (Casebook 630). In hope to reduce the rate of obesity in the American population, a proposal to increase the taxes of obese people has been made. Considering that not everyone is overweight or obese because of binging, gorging and physical inactivity, it is a controversial topic.
50 years ago obesity was not a problem, but know it is one of the most cases that doctors and researchers are paying close attention to because it is becoming a growing threat. The continuing expansion of the nation’s waistline has pushed obesity to the top of the list of major health problems in the United States. In recent decades, the prevalence of obesity has increased dramatically in the United States, tripling among children and doubling among adults. Studies shows that Almost 13 million (16.9%) of U.S. children ages 2 to 19 are obese. And more than one-third (about 35%) of U.S. adults are obese (more than 78 million adults).
That there is an obesity epidemic in America and the western world in general is not in doubt, but there is neither single nor simple answer as to why. It is obvious that in the US, as elsewhere, many things contribute to those ever-expanding waistlines of the population. It can all be broken down into elements such as genetics, environment nature and nurture, the environmental aspect being simply that the majority of folks these days get far less exercise than they did after say, WWII. The average working man used to have a job dominated by physical activity, but such work has largely been replaced with much more sedentary employment, meaning that lack of exercise combined with normal eating easily translates to excess weight as time goes by.
Abstract: Obesity is a widespread epidemic in the U.S. that needs to be taken more seriously. This is incredibly important because thousands of people die from this enormous issue. Americans do not take the issue seriously; it obvious by the millions of obese people in the United States. There are many contrasting opinions on this topic, such as the social rights and abilities of obese people; therefore, it causes controversies. The experts that have written books and articles on this concern have the solutions to the problem; however, it is up to the American people to make a change in their everyday life to rid the country of this horrible disease.
Why is there such an increased number of overweight people in the U.S. compared to other countries? I feel like It has always sort of been a known thing that a majority of people in the U.S. are overweight but I never knew why, I am glad that I was able to find some research on it. According to Harvard Public Health, “While the reasons for skyrocketing obesity were largely elusive 30 years ago, they are obvious now. The modern food era has spread out a smorgasbord of hyperpalatable, flavor-enhanced, additive-laced, convenient, and relatively affordable foods that are high in added sugar, unhealthy fats, and salt, and engineered to overcome our internal homeostatic eating signals.
To assist in visualization, a woman who is 64 inches and 170lbs is obese, a woman who is 66 inches and 186lbs is obese, and a woman who is 69 inches and 203lbs is obese (nhlbi). More than one third of Americans are obese (cdc phone) and more than one half of pregnant women are overweight or obese before becoming pregnant (Acog). Because being obese puts one at a considerably higher risk for many health issues, it requires that person to seek more health care and use more health resources than that of someone who is a healthy weight. The CDC says that
Obesity has become a major dilemma within America, mostly childhood obesity which has become in my eyes an epidemic. Childhood obesity will bring about adult obesity, health issues, psychological problems, and will even damper on sociological issues when pertaining to relating to culture and other people on a daily basis ( ex: brings about bullying or being bullied, social issues with kids, and low self-esteem and confidence). These include but never restricted to the fact of physical, social, environmental, psychological, and health issues all within a wider scale mostly if the pattern of obesity starts at an early age and then progress to adolescence and adulthood. The factors given in obesity has once again become a worldwide issue and concern for family, friends, and the child.
While doing this my curiosity about obesity got stronger, and I am eager to engulf in a discussion about obesity and why it is affecting America. My paper is going to focus on the topic of obesity in America while including aspects of food pantries and discussing solutions to this threatening problem. To start things off I want to identify exactly what obesity is. According to the Obesity Society (www.obesity.org), “Obesity is defined as excess adipose (fat) tissue”. This disease has engulfed over one third (approximately 78.6 million) of America’s population.
