Research has it that nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or rather obese. As campaign to sensitize the masses against habits that might otherwise lead to rise in victims affected by obese conditions is being aired by medics, the media and the rational public, it is evident that there is elevated prevalence of obesity in the United States which has since doubled the initial number of the previous decades. It is a matter of urgency and it calls for stringent measures to curb this condition. Before totally embarking on the topic of what causes obesity and ways of dealing with it, it is pertinent to understand the meaning of being overweight. There are various defects displayed by our bodies that are linked with obesity. Such health conditions include heart diseases, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, huge unhealthy cholesterol content in our system, asthma, sleep apnea, gallstones, kidney stones, infertility and even cancerous tumors. Discrimination among the social class is also evident among those with obesity conditions. It affects one emotionally since one becomes subject to lower wages, lower quality of life and likelihood of depression. Obesity has a great effect in the community in that it hampers with the economy, national productivity and even national defense. The costs for treating obesity are gradually getting higher day by day than the initial figures and the current figures are expected to escalate on the basis of increasing number of obesity victims in future. And such figures only stand for funds spent on medical care and drug prescription though it also has other costs that accompanies it, among them, lost days away from work, high insurance premiums, and lower wages and incomes.
