This is the type of essays used in debates. They are written to communicate and offer convincing reasons for or against a given proposition. This form of essay is widely used in standardized testing to measure students’ persuasion ability in the use of the English language. Objectivity is extremely vital for any argumentative essay. Very often, the prompts leading to an argumentative essay are questions which have no one straight answer. They are often debatable issues which have remained unanswered for many years. A high scoring essay is one that sustains objectivity and supports it with critical analysis of the subject. Academic Essay Academic writing belongs to a special class of essays that require a high degree of formality and objectivity. It is used in school settings as well as professional communications to communicate ideas, opinions and research findings. The aim of most academic essays is to shed more light on a topic by building on the work of others, either agreeing or disagreeing with existing work based on the writers work/experience. It is done with high level evidence based objectivities devoid of the authors subjective views. Generally, the use of first person pronouns by the author/s is discouraged. The guidelines for presenting such essays vary from institution to institutions as well as from discipline to discipline. These guidelines are often communicated along with the task. In most cases writers have several days to present the essay after they have received the prompt. This is to allow them time to research further into the topic so as to discover what others have had to do with that discipline.
