1.1 Background
The word language comes from the Latin word Lingua, which has meaning “tongue”. The tongue is used in more sound combinations rather than any other organ of speech. Language is very important in our life, to express our idea or though with each other. People need to communicate with each other because they cannot stand alone without have contact with other people. In communication, of course they need language to communicate their ideas or thoughts.
According to Levinson (1983:284), conversation may be taken to be that of predominant kind of talk which two or more participants freely alternate in speaking, which generally occurs in specific institutional setting like religious services, low courts, classroom and the like. Observations techniques can be divided into participant observation or direct observation and non- participant observation. Participant observation or direct observation is the process, enabling researchers to learn about the activities of the people under study in the natural setting through observing and participating in those activities. Non- participant observation, the research remains detached from the activity under observation and simply watch and record what is going.
In this study, the non-participant observation was used; the writer observed the activities of the receptionists by observing the receptionists when they communicated to the guests, then the data were collected by taking a note and recording the utterances of the receptionists while they were doing a conversation with the guests. After that, the recorded data also were intensified and very carefully listened to. The recorded data also were selected in order to make the data easier to
