Arizona Western College is very busy during the fall semester, there are many students so as a result classrooms are always packed, Starbucks is always busy and the cafeteria is usually crowded. While walking around campus you see students and staff members participating in different activities such as working on homework, having lunch, or sitting at a table with friends to have a decent conversation. It’s very rare that you see a student use the spare time they have in between classes to work on projects that are hobbies and not class related. Although he is not a huge fan of working out his physical features are surprisingly good being tall, slim and always full of energy. People are often surprised to find out that he is really more focused on academics than athletics. His days involve a lot of patience because he is always on campus working or studying. Johnathon admits he get bored at times but sees it as an opportunity to practice and develop his artistic skills. Sometimes Johnathon is spotted sitting in the cafeteria for many hours drawing in his notebook while waiting for class or work to begin. “Art is a great way to express myself and to exercise the mind in a much more interesting way than reading” Johnathon says whenever he is asked why he loves drawing so much. His favorite things to draw are superheroes the most recent one he has worked on was a character he saw called night wing while his nephew was watching cartoons. He puts tremendous effort in all of his drawings which usually end up looking phenomenal. Pat always was an artist at heart and started drawing at a very young age. He was crafty in his work, but later found his real passion in painting homes. His talent lead him into his career of choice which he took pride in. Pat also found painting to be very therapeutic, calming, and comforting, because he got to enjoy his follow coworkers and be out doors most of the time. He was finally doing what he loved; as well as, being appreciated for his art.

My best friend was the greatest role model at the time and she was amazing at drawing. Over the years, I’ve improved and it is now a treasured hobby. My schoolwork was covered with doodles in the margins of the papers, and abandoned sketches would slip through the pages of my notebooks. Many say that the art field is not respectful and maybe hard to get a stable job in. I wouldn’t refute as in some cases they can be right.
When I was young I wasn’t necessarily interested in art, but what I was truly interested in was color. The way color was associated with an emotion: yellow is happy, blue is sad, red is angry. I wanted to know why these colors felt these things. I would paint over my dull uniform to try and feel the same thing the color felt, and would be sent to the office all covered in paint for disrupting the class or mocking the assignment. When you’re young no one listens.

This is something that applies to students as well. As a student, you have to be responsible enough to balance school work with extracurricular activities along with family and friends. With band practices 5 or 6 days a week, each lasting 3 or 4 hours, and competitions most Saturdays, balancing school and a regular sleep schedule is quite a challenge. Along with band and classes, there comes the responsibility of volunteering with the local middle school, and those students depending on me. Going to Windy Hill Middle School twice a week after school is something else that I have to work into my weekly schedule.

The book tells a story of Arnold who is a hydrocephalic, a physical impairment that makes him to be picked on and bullied and which makes him vulnerable to seizures. One of the main struggles that Arnold faces in this novel is between his part-time Indian WellPoint self (Junior) and his half-white Reardan self (Arnold). On the reservation he is intimidated and picked on, while at Reardan he receives respect and chooses to be somebody.

As a child he always loved to draw and since his mother was a painter, she would never let him use coloring books or any other drawing books. He had to learn how to create his own characters and drew all over his lunch bag every morning before school. He also would draw pictures and write stories in school when he was younger. He began playing the guitar and writing songs when he was eight years old. Drawing was his passion and being that he was so gifted with the drawing gene it came natural to him.

Students face various challenges throughout their college career. Thus, the problems that students have can range from balance, new lifestyle, to financial problems. Therefore, finding a balance between being a student, possibly working, and keeping up with their social life is a necessity. Similarly, others are away from home for the first time thus, they have a new responsibility with being on their own and findings ways to deal with homesickness. Likewise, being exposed to new financial situations is yet another challenge college students will need to learn how to cope with.
