Greek myths are a very valuable resource to help modern society better understand the ancient Greek world. They provide a source of entertainment as well as cultural education. There are many ways that scholars and students are able to think about myths, but one useful way to think about them is through the four functions of a myth: mystical, cosmological, sociological, and pedagogical. A myth that is a good example of these four functions is the ancient story of Prometheus and Pandora. Each function of a myth is different and attempts to explain something unique about the world or society we live in. The mystical function of a myth attempts to instill a realization of wonder and complexity to the universe. A myth with the mystical function …show more content…
Right after Prometheus created fire, he began to show it off to all of the fellow citizens. Eventually, the idea of fire and having light caught on throughout the community and citizens: “Everything had changed. Man had come out of his cave.” This part attempts to explain how society initially became acquainted with each other. It seems as if it is justifying the basic beginning of the social order at that time. The sociological function attempts to explain certain social, political, or ethical norms. In this myth, it attempts to explain certain social norms, which would be the norm of socializing with …show more content…
One being that if you are too greedy, your gifts will come with a penalty, “Zeus answered, ‘Do you not know, Prometheus, that every gift comes with a penalty?” In this myth, Zeus has a goal of teaching Prometheus that if he wishes for more than he actually needs, he will have a consequence to bear. This lesson can commonly be applied in reality. The second lesson that Zeus attempts to teach Prometheus is the reason why society does not need fire: “He [society] is happy, I say, happy without fire. And so he shall remain.” This lesson within the myth says that if you are happy with or without something, you should remain that way. Why change something that works the way it presently is? There is one last lesson that is taught in the myth of Prometheus. It is the lesson that says not to defy the gods. “Many centuries he [Prometheus] lay there- until another hero was born brave enough to defy the gods.” In the myth of Pandora, a young woman was created out of clay and given many different talents by all the different gods. She was then made a living woman and given as a bride to Prometheus’ brother as a token of respect. Pandora was haunted her entire life by her gift of curiosity and a box that one of the gods gave her as a gift with orders not to open. She tried very hard to pay no attention to it but then eventually gave in and opened it. It was in this moment that she
Second thing about Prometheus is — he betrayed his people (Titans) by helping Zeus during the war ( Olympians VS. Titans). In the first few sentences, I wrote the Prometheus stole fire form Zeus right? Why? It’s because he loves his creations.
Prometheus comes to understand that the reason he has felt no regret for his actions, is because they are what makes him an individual. This meaning that throughout his life he has been degraded because of how he would wonder and constantly ask questions, but this has made him a person with views and genuine curiosity on how the world works. These are all characteristics of a single person because not all people have the same views on everything. Surprisingly, in Prometheus’ society no one is considered an individual and
Toward the beginning of the myth, Epimethus recalls the wise words of his brother: “We have reason to fear the gods,’ said Epimetheus, ‘and also their gifts,’ he added, pointing to the casket” (Retold by Untermeyer 478). This is proved to be important because it explains the reason why the casket should not be opened. Prometheus, Epimethus’s brother, cautioned Epimethus about the untrustworthy behavior of the gods. With this knowledge, Epimethus knows that Pandora should never open her dowry. Similarly in Icarus Flies Too Close to the Sun, Daedalus warns Icarus of the dangers of flying too high or too low.
For example, Helen on the Wall explores how one woman was able to bring so much violence and discord upon men. This reminded us greatly of the story of Pandora. When Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took revenge on him by giving Pandora to Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus. Zeus gave Pandora a jar and told her she was not to open it. However, Pandora became curious and opened the jar.
This exemplifies the fact that Prometheus has discovered that life does not mean that he should work for the good of others, but that it means that he must live his life to the best of his own potential. This, by definition, makes him an
The mortal descendants of Zeus and the other gods became the heroes we still hear about today. The book provides moral lessons for children in the story of King Midas who was granted a wish where everything he touched turned to gold, even his daughter. Heracles holds great strength, but that that strength comes at a price of killing people he
Comparing and contrasting the similarities between the Greek mythology of Pandora and the Biblical writings for Eve, is an enlightening topic. In Greek, the name Pandora means, “all gifts.” Hesiod had written, many literary works that included Pandora and her creation by Zeus. “Theogony” was one title work of Hesiod’s and the other was, “Works and Days.” Hesiod brings to light, in his writings that Pandora was created for the purpose to deceive man.
In the story it says, “And from her rich ground grew an abundance of trees and flowers, and out of crevices, spirits, beasts, and early man crept forth.” Question 3 In the story, Athena it shows the characteristics of a myth because it tells how spiders came to Earth. It also shows that Athena has supernatural powers when Athena turns Arachne into a spider. It shows human flaws on pg.
Through thorough analysis of Zeus’ interaction with Prometheus in both Hesiod’s Theogony and Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound, this essay will be able to clarify which one of the authors had the most accurate
Mythology is the collection of myths that denotes commonly cultural and religious beliefs of ancient human beings. The elements of it were usually the involvement of god, goddess and heroes. In addition, it was based on a man’s desire, beliefs and ideas. It also told the natural occurrence and its main purpose was to teach people moral lessons. One of the example of Greek mythology is the divine hero of ancient Greece his name was Heracles, but people knew him as Hercules.
As Armstrong explains, “mythology was therefore designed to help us to cope with the problematic human predicament. It helped people to find their place in the world and their true orientation” (6). The idea of myths was created to teach humans proper behavior that fit with their ideal society, as well as help people live in peace with one another. They also taught valuable lessons on how not to live since people didn 't know where they come from and where they belong. We invented stories by using gods, humans and magical creatures to explain something that happens in nature.
Another lesson that can be obtained from greek mythology is too much pride leads to easy demise, we should not have to much pride, be hospitable to others and make sure we leave a good impressions. The myth Baucis and Philemon gives a fine example of this when, disguised as beggars the gods came down to earth in search of a place to stay for the night, they were rejected by everyone for their haggard appearances except from a old couple. For the couple's generous and unexpected hospitality the gods rewarded them greatly and provided them with a wish while the others who refused them were punished. Whether its for the best or for the worst, the first impression you make on someone can define the relationship that is built. It is safe to assume
One of them is that no one can go against fate, not even immortals. When Cronus finds out about his fate, he goes to extreme measures to try to escape it. However, Cronus is not able to escape his own fate, and is conquered by Zeus in the end. He tries greatly and fails, which results in a pitiless punishment. This leads into a second theme: greed will eventually strike you back.
In the story, Prometheus warns his brother, Epimetheus, not to accept any gifts given to him by the gods. However, Epimetheus decides to ignore this warning when he takes Pandora as his wife. Without this decision, the story would not have ended with all evil being released into the world. However, Pandora received one final warning before the story took a downfall. Pandora was instructed to not open the box she was given,
