Then, that was when I became curious and interested in the dental field. When I was applying for colleges, I kept in mind that I wanted to become a dentist. And, even since I came to the United States and visited the dentist the experience kept me interested. In my second semester I took my first introduction to dental hygiene, I have learned a clearer understanding of what a dental hygienist does and the key difference between a dentist. And also last month I had the opportunity to shadow a second year student working her patient Barbra.
I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be placed at your clinic as a student of Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant on the Rehab unit. I believe that the services you have to offer are incredibly unremarkable such acute care and specialized programs. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge about Trillium Health Care Hospital and what it has to offer. I am currently enrolled in semester two of the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program at Humber College. My previous work at Etobicoke General Hospital as a Co-op student has given me the opportunity to get the hands-on experience that they do not offer at school.

I have shaped my skill of evidence-based practice during the first year clinical placement. Since then have been applying the skill in my everyday life to help improve the health of my family, friends and other relatives, especially in developing the health quality of my elderly family. Recently I visited my family back in Indonesia for Christmas and I took the time to visit my 85-year-old grandmother who has been looked after by one of my aunties. For her age, my grandmother was doing very well in carrying out her activities of daily living. However, she refused to walk independently since she had a fall two days before my arrival.
How do we as a society determine high health standards? As Watson described in her theory there are contributing factors based on an overall physical, mental and social functioning of well-being. Physically we can encourage and teach patients to exercise and eat healthy but is that the passage to achieving optimal health. As a personal trainer, I live by the importance of exercise and nutrition but as a nursing student and through life experiences I have come to realize the importance of mental and social health. A physical assessment of a patient is completed much like a head to toe assessment, the hospital staff is tasked with treating or medicating the patient to control the physical symptoms.

1.Describe, in your own words, how occupational therapy helps people. Occupational therapy allows a patient to work towards the goal of being able to perform basic everyday functional tasks. Therapy will differ for each patient, providing purposeful tasks that will allow the most growth for the specific individual needs. Being able to be an independent individual that can perform functional tasks is something that most people strive for, and if something happened that altered this way of life, it can be very stressful and even feel dehumanizing to the patient. Striving for independence and working with the therapists is something that will positively affect the patient's quality of life.
As an occupational therapy (OT) practitioner I would want to work with a company or organization that upholds the values and principles of my profession. According to the American Organization Therapy Association (AOTA) as professionals, we should not violate the principles of; Beneficence, Autonomy, Veracity, Nonmaleficence, Fidelity and Justice (AOTA, 2015). Some questions that I will ask to determine if an organization has a culture that supports ethical practice and decision-making would be; what are the organization’s values, what are the expectations of the staff and is there room for professional growth?
Volunteering at McKenna Farms Therapy Services I was able to observe pediatric occupational therapy sessions. Not only did I get to observe Occupational Therapy sessions, but I observed Hippotherapy sessions too. What I found so unique about McKenna Farms is that they had Speech Therapist, Physical Therapist, and Occupational Therapist all together at one clinic. This allowed me to witness how the different types of therapy fit together and how the therapist would collaborate to find the best way to treat the children. My favorite part was finding ways to communicate with the kids.
