The tables are turned pretty drastically in these two stories because lives are taken because of it. In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” Peyton Farquhar is caught for messing with Owl Creek Bridge and is going to be hanged for doing so. As he is falling with the noose around his neck the noose appears to break and Farquhar falls in to the Creek. He then makes it all the way downstream without getting shot by the muskets and cannon. The protagonist of the story is Payton Farquhar, who is described as “a well-to-do planter, of an old and highly respected Alabama family”. Farquhar believed that “No service was too humble for him to perform in aid of the South…” and he had “…the character of a civilian who was at heart a soldier”. One evening while Farquhar and his wife were sitting “on a rustic bench near the entrance to his grounds, a gray-clad soldier rode up to the gate and asked for a drink of water”.

Farquhar was told that anyone who tried interfering with the railroad construction that was happening on the bridge would be hanged.
He is surprised by a bear attack and is quickly demoted from a high leadership position to the crew’s biggest liability. His men carried him for him for weeks until winter came and the elements over powered their loyalty. The men knew that they could not keep on going with him so they split into two groups. One was to go for help and the other was to take care of him.
Have you ever entered a room, stumbling amongst an eye-stretching conversation? You know, one of those conversations where your mouth gapes open in sudden interest, while your head eagerly turns back and forth with your eyes following each party involved in the conversation. Well, you have entered the in Media res part of the conversation, just as Ambrose Bierce opened An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. In my opinion from a reader’s perspective the use of the literary device is sort of impudent for the reader to digest in most stories. However the details of the hyped scene are so rich and vivid that you become hooked and decide to catch-up on previous components and facts which may have led to this event later.
