Introduction and history of Oceanographic Museum and Monte Carlo Harbor The Oceanographic Museum was inaugurated in 1910 by Prince Albert I. Jacques-Yves Cousteau was director from 1957 to 1988. It is the oldest oceanographic museum in the world. This monumental architectural work of art has an impressive façade above the sea, raising over the sheer cliff face to a height of almost 90 meters. It has the length of 100 meters and three floors including the underground floor. On its second floor, in front there is an eight meters height white pillar carved by a huge stone. Moreover, Monaco itself takes special care to develop maritime activities as well because the land space of Monaco is very limited and it doesn’t have enough places inland for development. The Prince Albert II said the principality is trying not to create too many high buildings or sensitive areas of Monaco, which means the only means of development is on the sea. Now the principality is going to construct more sea reclamation with the most sustainable way. The sea reclamation project started from the Prince Albert I and there will be more in Monaco in the future. Therefore, people there are still using and consuming the sea and the principality will develop depending on the sea as well. It has a top-ranking scientific laboratory. Most of the specimens the prince and the scientists collected during their exploration study in sea are preserved in this museum. In 1910 when Prince Albert built this museum, he addressed that scientific significance of it. He once said: “I opened Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and I will hand over it to the people who are doing scientific research. Through the principality’s pioneering development, Monaco will be the center of world oceanographic research.
