Because of Odysseus’s sharp intellect, cunningness, and with the help from the gods, he finishes the heroes’ journey. Odysseus’s main flaw in The Odyssey is his pride and not being able to control his crew. Test, allies, and enemies happen when Odysseus blinds Polyphemus who is the son of Poseidon. When Odysseus and his crew first found Polyphemus’s cave they could’ve just stolen food or left but instead Odysseus wanted to stay and receive a gift.
Odysseus did not tell the full truth to his men, he slept with the goddesses and he was impatient. If Odysseus would’ve told the truth and done what the gods told him to do, he would’ve gotten to Ithaca faster. Based on the story and the facts, Odysseus was prideful, unloyal and irresponsible, therefore, I deem that Odysseus is not an archetype hero. Odysseus was prideful. He thought that he could beat anyone who came up on his path.
It is clear that Odysseus is not a hero through his terrible leadership. In conclusion, Odysseus is not a hero because of his impulsive decisions, his hubris, and terrible leadership. He does not plan ahead, he is not humble and a sore loser, and he strays away from telling important things to his men. Though in Greek society Odysseus is seen as a hero, he can not be called one now.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus experiences a powerful craving on his journey home. He must pass the island of the Sirens in order to return home but also must avoid landing there; doing so would mean certain death for him and his crew. Although he cannot control his impulses in the moment, Circe’s keen advice beforehand and his crew’s steadfastness save Odysseus from his own desire. In looking at The Odyssey, we will consider Circe’s directions to Odysseus and the way the Sirens and Odysseus act at their meeting to find that Odysseus cannot control his appetite and needs specific guidelines, in this case from Circe, to survive a life-or-death situation.
If they did not show this scene the audience/reader may not believe Oedipus is capable of the murders at the crossroads. It’s like Tiresias makes Oedipus angry on purpose so the audience/reader figures out the truth without him actually saying it. W. J. Verdenius quotes, “Tiresias is at once a traditionalist and an exceedingly clever man.” Tiresias’ ironic behavior and attitude towards revealing prophecy makes him symbolic to the
Calchas says that it’s his fate to anger Apollo in some way, so he wants protection because he thinks he’s too weak to go against Apollo. Calchas knows that Apollo is a powerful man, so even if Apollo can hold out against his own anger, he’ll eventually strike at him. In the end, he enlist Achilles help, because he knows that Achilles is very strong. (Homer 1. 86-98) Also, in the Iliad book 1, Achilles thinks that it’s Atrides fate to die.
A theme in both the epic and the film is: if one is respectful to the gods he will be helped, but if one is disrespectful he will be punished. The first example of help is shown in the poem through Odysseus’ rescue from Calypso’s island. Odysseus was stuck on the island against his will and wanted to get back home. (Homer 1.56-57)
In Sophocles's epic play Antigone, Creon is a leader who is too prideful and his hubris is the reason of his downfall. Creon’s fatal flaw is his hubris. Creon’s downfall includes the loss of his family and losing the trust from the people of Thebes. Pride will always be a problem.
The character in Diary of Anne Frank that was chosen to be written about is Peter Van Daan, with a mesmerizing type of personality. In the beginning, his personality shows how he is innocent, weak, and very lazy. Later on, Peter thinks he has a connection with Anne, but she thinks that he is a slob as well. Furthermore, he promises her he will never fight with her. It is important because it reveals how he is not the smoothest guy in the world, but he knows how to handle things you might think he can 't.
Ralph, one of the most important characters in the novel serves as the human ego, a subconscious mind that works by reason and common sense. However, even the conscious and reasonable mind can vanish in a society with no structure and civilization. At the beginning of the novel, Ralph asserts “… We can help them to find us… a ship comes near the island they may not notice us…we must make smoke on top of the mountain…” (38). Ralph focuses on the important and common sense actions that need to be taken in order to survive and get rescued. Even so, Ralph is being diminished by the savagery committed by Jack and his hunters, the quotes “He tried to remember…we want smoke…
1) In this quote, the term being used is metaphor because Life and Game are two completely different things but they are being compared to each other like if they are similar. 2) I think the author’s purpose for using this term is that he explains that Holden feels alone because he doesn’t feel like he is winning. 3) This quote revolves around the overall theme because it shows that Holden is isolated from everybody around him. 4) • I really like this dislike this idea because Holden is wrong you need to play according to the rules to win not be on the winning side. • I think this idea seems important because it is an inspiration quote to live by even though Holden doesn’t believe it; this is how life goes it is in reality.
While trapped on an island full of little boys, some characters have to step up and take point while others are mere confidants who are mistreated and abused. Just like the real world, many people are left out and rejected but they still hold a place in society. Piggy, a young boy on the island, is treated poorly from the very beginning but yet he is known as the scientific, rational side of the civilization portrayed in Lord of the Flies. He quickly becomes Ralph’s confidant but serves a greater purpose in the book by giving rational insight and bright ideas on survival and also someone to pick on to increase insecurities and self power. Piggy served as Ralph’s lieutenant from the beginning to the end.
