The decisions Odysseus made during the long trip to Ithaca made positive differences in the story’s result. Odysseus tricked the Cyclops by giving him false information about his identity which opened up the opportunity to escape. Another wise decision made by Odysseus was the fact that he took the path past Scylla recommended by Circe to get home which killed six of his men compared to them all. During the Siren’s song, Odysseus had the men plug their ears and tie him to a post so he would be able to hear the song but keep everyone safe. It may sound wrong for Odysseus not to inform the others of the dangers the crew would face, but if he did the crew would have messed up the plans to get home and chickened out during the
Odysseus comes up with a brilliant plan to escape Polyphemus’ cave by hiding under the rams when the cyclops releases the rams to the fields. He says “First I loosened myself from the ram, then loosened
He understands if they kill the Cyclops, the entire crew will die. The Cyclops is the only one who is strong enough to carry the rock and lead them to escape from his cave. By not killing the Cyclops, Odysseus saves his whole group of men from death and simply practicing habits of
‘The Odyssey” where Odysseus tries to persuade his crew to bypass Thrinacia, the island of the sun god Helios, but they were too stubborn and insisted on landing. Due to their ignorance, and refusal to listen to Odysseus they accidentally angered the god Helios and to appease Helios Zeus sent down a thunderbolt on their ship killing all of Odysseus’s crew except himself. This is proof of how this was not entirely his fault, and how his name and reputation of being a hero shouldn’t be
He showed leadership when he stopped his men from eating Lotus fruit, which was not good for them. He also shows strength when Antinous throws a chair at his back, but he was not fazed. Lastly, he shows off his strategic qualities by lying to the Cyclops about his boat being destroyed, so the Cyclops could not harm it. While heroes are made to make sacrifices and take risks, Odysseus fulfills his expectations as a great
Usually, epic heroes share common character traits such as courage, self control, fearless, daring. In Homer’s Odyssey, it is my belief that Odysseus is heroic mostly because his is courageous and fearless. For example, he wasn’t panicking when he was against the cyclops, he was thinking of what to do so they can escape the cave.
I strongly agree with your points on Odysseus’ leadership. Other than in the books “Scylla and Charybdis” and “The Sirens,” Odysseus’ leadership is also shown in “The Cyclops.” Despite being pressured by his crew to leave the cave, Odysseus used his wit and convinced his men to stay, as he wanted to see what Polyphemus had to offer. This shows Odysseus’ courage. Later on, his intelligence allowed his men to take out Polyphemus’ eye and escape the cave, leaving only a few dead.
Theseus shows his bravery by going on a quest to save and avenge many people by killing a monster. He is going to go kill the Minotaur where he would have to go into a maze called the Labyrinth, find the Minotaur and kill him then with “the ball of thread lay where he had dropped it…. The others followed.” (Hamilton 215). Theseus went out of his way to help
Eventually, the men escaped the cave by tying themselves to the underside of the Cyclops's sheep. Despite his immense intellect, Ulysses falls short on occasion. After escaping the cave, the men made their way back to the ship. Feeling emboldened by his wonderful scheme, Ulysses began to taunt the giant. Despite his men’s pleas, Ulysses would not yield.
Odysseus had lots of pride in himself and his crew. Although Odysseus got him and his crew out of the cyclops's cave, he could not hold his pride in as he told the cyclops his name. " Cyclops- if any man on the face of the Earth should ask you who blinded, shamed you so- say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye, Laertes' son who makes his home in Ithaca!" (9.558-562).
Third reason, when they met the Cyclop who lived in the cave, the Cyclop “caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, splattering the floor” (Homer 275-280), Odysseus knew about them, but still decided to bring his crew mates into the cave. Which proves that he is not a hero because letting people in danger is not what a hero would do. Then later when he got the Cyclop drunk, he stabbed the Cyclop and escaped to his ship, but got cocky and revealed his real name, “tell him Odysseus, raider of cities took your eyes” (Homer 500), which provoked the Cyclop to put a curse on them, “let him lose all companions, and return under strange sail to bitter days at home” (Homer 535). A hero would never provoke
Upon arriving, they were greeted by the face of a frightened boy, Jayden. Johnny, as soon as he heard this, told the firing captain to dispose of the young child. The captain took pity on the boy, however, and instead smuggled him out of the planet on a slave ship headed for Sector 8 on Venus.
Odysseus is not a hero because he stabs Polyphemus in the eye and blinds him. Odysseus is still a hero because he is a leader. Moreover, after Odysseus and his men fight the Cicones, he orders ¨Back and Quickly! Out to sea again!” (Homer 984).
Was Odysseus a Hero? The Odyssey is a story of a Greek hero’s journey home from war. He and his crew set sail from Troy to get home to Ithaca. They have many setbacks on their journey and in the end he loses all of his men. Odysseus has to get home in time before his wife marries another man.
