He could’ve easily have forced them to leave because of how powerful he is. He shows violence and no mercy towards almost everything. Odysseus resorts to violence in all situations to get what he needs done. He contradicts himself when talking to Polyphemus about eating his own guests because in reality, he most likely would´ve killed anyone who stepped foot into his home. ¨That left Odysseus waiting in his hall as Athena helped him plot the slaughter of the suitors.¨ (19.
Lastly, he and all of his men escape the cave by strapping themselves to the bottom of sheep, so Polyphemus cannot find them (The Cyclops). All of these things that he did to make sure his crew had a safe escape shows his cleverness. He used his head and the limited resources he had, which makes him a hero. Another time he shows cleverness is when he creates a plan to get rid of the suitors, instead of just barging in to see his wife and family (“Twenty years gone, and I am back again…”). Odysseus knew that if he went back without a plan, the suitors would just kill him.
This is the end of act one. In act two they tell us of the island of Aeolus which ends up giving them a worthless gift, and then the land of Laestrygones, that destroy all of their ships but one. They then end up at Aeaea, and split up into two groups, one to search the island, and the other to watch the ship. The exploring group then gets trapped by Circe’s cunning magic. Following this news, Odysseus is offered help from Hermes for ways to avoid Circe’s magic.
A way in which he fulfills this is when he gets his men out of Polyphemus’s cave. While they are trapped, Odysseus has the idea to stab Polyphemus eye with a hot steak to blind him. This is smart by Odysseus because while he is blind, Polyphemus asks Odysseus what his name is and Odysseus responds with nobody so that when the other Cyclops come over and ask who is hurting him he will say nobody. This is an example of quick thinking because this led them to be able to escape from his cave. Without him saying that, they may not of been able to get out.
For example, in the novel Lor d Of The Flies by W illiam Golding, the children were stranded on an island and they were faced with many different situations where they had to decide to help themselves or others. Jack and his hunters snuck into where Ralph, Piggy and the others where and started fighting them and attacking them in their sleep so they could get Piggy’s glasses to lit the fire so they could have meat. They caused Piggy to get hurt along with the others and now Piggy can’t see. They are willing to do this to the people they are stranded on this island with rather than
Odysseus is the symbol of intelligent in the story. He considered more perfectly and thoughtful than his colleagues. Both text and video demon that Odysseus and his crews were going to landed on a secret island and find out the truth of it, but they accidentally got attract into a monster's cave and got beset with crisis. Although
Odysseus, who knew the wine would make the Cyclops sleepy, offered him “liquor to wash down your scraps of men” (256). This creative use of the wine made the Cyclops sleepy, and it gave Odysseus’ crew a chance to blind the Cyclops. Another demonstration of his guile is when he tricked the Cyclops who “stroked each ram” by belting himself onto the underside of the ram. If it wasn’t for Odysseus’ quick thinking, the men would’ve been eaten by the blind Cyclops, who checked every animate before letting it exit the cave. When I was younger, I always let my dog sleep on my bed at night; therefore, I would always blame the dog when I wet the bed.
Cyclope found them and thought they were the bad guy. So Cyclope trapped them in the cave and started eating Odysseus’s crew. “We felt a pressure on our hearts,” Odysseus recalled,”We cried aloud, lifting our hands to Zeus, powerless, looking on at this, appalled.” As we all know, they finally got out. From the case above, we know that Odysseus does afraid of Cyclops, and that have just perfectly proofed that bravery is not the absence of fear.
On the island they hide in a cave, but get trapped inside by a Cyclops, which causes Odysseus to formulate a plan to escape, “I hewed again to make a stake with pointed end. I held this in the fire’s heart and turned it, toughening it” (Homer 568). While the Cyclops is sleeping Odysseus and four of his remaining men stab the monster in the eye and later escape due to him being blind. The plot
This was shown when Tom and Huck played jokes on Jim. Also, in the middle of the book, Huck played an immature joke on Jim when he placed a dead snake’s skin in Jim’s bed, which made the mate bite Jim’s foot. Another time, Huck fools Jim into thinking that their separation on the raft was a big dream, and Jim expresses that he was so scared when he lost Huck that he was heart broken. From then on, Huck promised to never hurt Jim again because he felt so bad for him. This was shown when Huck said, “I didn’t do him no more mean tricks, and I wouldn’t done that one if I’d a knowed it would make him feel that way” (102).
Is Odysseus a hero or a villain? In my eyes he is a hero struggling to do the best he can but often finds things don't always go as planned. One of the many reasons I believe this is because he shows that he cares for his comrades. He tried at great measures to help his men return home to Ithaca alive. When he faced the Cyclops he stabbed his eye, so the men could get away.
You’ve seen it everywhere; books, movies, t.v shows, they all have got it. But what exactly for all intents and purposes is “it”? “It” is the Elements of the Archetypal Hero. This concept was actually theorized by Joseph Campbell. From older classics such as The Odyssey written by Homer and newer classics such as George Lucas’s Star Wars: A New Hope, these elements can be seen being portrayed.
What would it feel like to have the whole world targeting you? What would it be like when it took you 20 years to get back to your home? I doubt you’d know. Unless you’re Koro Sensei (a yellow, octopus-like creature who can fly at mach 20 and plans to destroy the Earth in less than a year’s time, and trains a class of 27 students to try and assassinate him) or Odysseus (goes to fight the Trojan war for 10 years and due to bad luck and misfortune, and the [very angry] sea god Poseidon, it takes another 10 years to voyage home). It is true that Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, powerful and smart, but he does these things in a selfish way.
The qualities that heroes should have are smarts so they can get out of tough situations such as if the villain traps them in a bind. The other thing they need to be cunning to use their skills to escape or evade their enemies. They should be fearless because if they're not fearless they might die because they would freeze up from the fear. Also they need to be strong physically and mentally if they're not strong they couldn't get out of difficult situations. Odysseus is not a typical hero because he’s unfaithful to his wife, he’s arrogant, and he puts his crew in terrible situations where most of them will die, though he still has all the qualities a hero should possess.
What does being a hero mean? Being a hero means being brave, confident at times, having good leadership skills, willing to fight for their town, and smart every once in awhile. How does being a hero qualify to Odysseus? At times Odysseus can be a good man til he has to leave for war and a variety of things happen.
