Third reason, when they met the Cyclop who lived in the cave, the Cyclop “caught two in
his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, splattering the floor” (Homer 275-280),
Odysseus knew about them, but still decided to bring his crew mates into the cave. Which
proves that he is not a hero because letting people in danger is not what a hero would do.
Then later when he got the Cyclop drunk, he stabbed the Cyclop and escaped to his ship, but
got cocky and revealed his real name, “tell him Odysseus, raider of cities took your
eyes” (Homer 500), which provoked the Cyclop to put a curse on them, “let him lose all
companions, and return under strange sail to bitter days at home” (Homer 535). A hero would
never provoke
He succeeds in stabbing the Cyclops in the eye, even though it could have gotten him killed. Through Odysseus’s actions in this book, it is clear to see that he is willing to risk injury and even death to help his crew escape from the Cyclops. To be a hero one must show great courage, and Odysseus does show courage in this book of the Odyssey by risking his life to save his men. Odysseus values his family greatly and shows bravery nevertheless these are not the only two reasons why Odysseus should be considered a
Hero: “a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities” (Merriam-Webster) Evident in many classic stories, the hero is always the character that makes the justifiable choice. Their role as the hero is never questioned. The hero always prevails, and in the end, the hero accomplishes the journey with greater wisdom, knowledge, and reestablished views of the world that compensates for the horrors they encounter along the journey.
Just like in the story of the cyclops, he put his men first to put them to safety. He isn't greedy and looks out for others. He did everything he could to ensure that they would all get off the island safely. Even if some of Odysseus's men were unlucky enough to get eaten, Odysseus still felt sorrow for them. A hero is one to care for others and not himself.
The first reasons why Odysseus is a hero is because he risks his life for crew multiple times throughout the story. In the story, ‘The Odyssey’ by Homer, Odysseus and his crew sail to Aeaea, home
You’ve seen it everywhere; books, movies, t.v shows, they all have got it. But what exactly for all intents and purposes is “it”? “It” is the Elements of the Archetypal Hero. This concept was actually theorized by Joseph Campbell. From older classics such as The Odyssey written by Homer and newer classics such as George Lucas’s Star Wars: A New Hope, these elements can be seen being portrayed.
After reading the “Odyssey,” a lot of people raise questions about Odysseus being a hero. What is a hero anyway? A hero is a person, who is idealized or admired for his/her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Odysseus does fit in all the requirements of a hero as he fights in the Trojan war, he saves his crew from Polyphemus, and he saves his palace from the suitors. Therefore, Odysseus can be called a hero.
The greeks had a very set idea of what a hero is supposed to act like. Not very many people met their very high expectations. They thought of a hero as someone who showed honer and glory in everything they did. They also thought that a hero should be proud and clever. Odysseus was considered a hero to the greeks, because not only did he exceed in all of those things but he represented them effortlessly.
Odysseus is a typical example of a hero. He is able to pull off miraculous things to save himself and his crew seemingly without fail. The story of his journey is well known, and a great tale of his adventures. In the two parts we have read so far, we see what he is willing to do for his crew, and his intelligence and quick thinking in difficult situations. The first challenge that waits them is the island of Cyclopes.
A hero is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. In the movie, Odysseus shows that he is a hero by showing off his bravery and courage to defeat several monsters. He showed courage when he faced the Cyclops, when he met Lotus Eaters, and when he went back to Ithaca to see his wife. Odysseus and his men went to the cave to show the Cyclops that they are better than him. The Cyclops got angry when he got back to his cave since Odysseus and his men were eating the Cyclops’ food.
Odysseus is a hero because he is smart. For example, when Odysseus and his men approach the giant he offers him ¨liquor to wash down your scraps of men¨ (Homer 991). Odysseus is clever by doing this because he can predict that the liquor will make him fall asleep. He knows that the boulder that is blocking the entrance is heavy so he doesn 't kill Polyphemus. Instead, Odysseus only hurts him.
Summary: Cyclops In the story, Odysseus is still speaking to the Phaeacians, but is now telling them of his encounter with Polyphemus, the cyclops. Strong winds blew Odysseus and his men to Polyphemus’ island, where they unloaded and entered a cave that Polyphemus happened to live in. When he entered the cave, he closed the entrance with a large boulder that only he could move, trapping himself, his sheep, and Odysseus inside. After he ate some of Odysseus’ men, Odysseus devised a plan to get the cyclops to move the boulder so that the men could escape.
Robert Downey Jr. one acknowledged what a hero is in one sentence,”I think we all do herioic things, but hero is not a noun, it’s a verb.” ( The man was the Iron Man in Iron Man in 2008 and was in the The Avengers in 2012, after hitting a rough patch with drugs. Similar to the majority group classified as a hero, he overcame a huge obstacle bravely, but with help from others. Robert Downey Jr. is still a true inspiration to young children, unlike Odysseus.
Some think Odysseus is a hero for many reasons, mainly because he helps many people including his family and his crew. Even when terrible things happen to him and his crew he perseveres and continues on his journey home. Even though Odysseus and his men do bad things like eating the sun god’s cattle there still are many reasons why he is a hero. One reason to support my claim is that he saves his crew many times. One example is when they sailed by the Sirens.
In The Odyssey Homer makes Odysseus’ journey to his beloved Ithaca excruciating. Odysseus encounters many friends and foes throughout his journey and has to be a leader throughout his experiences. As an example, he encounters Polyphemus and Poseidon, both of whom make his journey mentally and physically painful. Odysseus faces countless scenarios in which he has to save multiple people in those situations. He also encounters the suitors, who are a group of men that try to marry Penelope, when he returns to reclaim his home.
While they may have a point, they do not take into account the fact that he did not use his brain when approaching this challenge. He had been prideful on this part of his journey. To conclude, Odysseus was a hero. He was a hero when he used his brains to ponder about and reach the answer to a predicament. Heros are the people who complete tasks that they are afraid to complete, but they do
