Menelaus states, “No one took on so much, went through so much as Odysseus.” The epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, is the story of an ancient war hero’s 10 year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus faces the wrath of the gods, and fights battles against many mythical creatures such as Polyphemus, and the his grueling mental battle with the sirens. Across Odysseus’s journey, he shows many characteristics of a hero such as his resiliency, and his tactileness. For example, Odysseus shows his ability as a tactician through his encounters with Gods and monsters, such as his seven year time span on calypso’s island.
In any country, kingdom, or household there is usually the one that seems to overrule all in that specified area. Leaders are strong, courageous, and skilled in combat and wits. Leaders are either looked at as an ally or an enemy. They are confident, bold, and respected. In the poem, The Odyssey, Homer gives us insight of how a tough, cunning, and wise man is brought through twenty years of suffering to reach is home that he weeps for so much.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.
Beowulf is characterized as an epic hero because of his glorious legacy. This epic hero was in constant danger from evil but always defeated it. He also had a moral code that separated him from mere mortals. The epic hero portrayed many traits that made him great. Although he died in battle, Beowulf’s leadership, bravery, and sense of morality made him an epic hero among men.
There are many Greek heroes to fit this archetypal pattern. Although Achilles and Hector were enemies, both are deserving to fit the hero archetype. Neither were Zeus's sons nor were they born from any of the Gods, however these warriors were gifted with enormous energy
Because of them, many epics began to be later written; “An epic is a long narrative poem that celebrates a hero’s deeds” (Little pg 34, 6-7). These epics are very important, but intense poems that tell a strong pointed story. Although through the centuries of being orally passed on, these stories can tend to evolve slightly. Later on, these stories where recoded. Without heroism from these great men together, epics would have no chance in this complex world.
Many characteristics can be applied to Odysseus in the book the (Odyssey, Homer), but a few really stand out. In fact, Odysseus can be considered an epic hero in the Odyssey, as evidenced by his actions, his faults, and his loyalty. An epic hero is brave, adventurous, a leader, and loyal. Most epic hero’s have faults as well. These characteristics closely follow Odysseus’s own.

All these affect Odysseus’s heroic stature, or his reputation as a hero. Some may say that Odysseus’s positive attributes, such as his strength, and his negative attributes, like his tendency to fall into temptations, make up his heroic stature. However, Odysseus’s heroic stature is mainly dependent on the gods. Countless times in The Odyssey by Homer, the fate of Odysseus depends on the gods.
The mighty Odysseus has proved himself as a hero in The Odyssey in multiple occasions. First, to be a hero I believe that bravery and cleverness are needed to perform a heroic act. There is no need for a certain superpower or strength in my opinion to become a hero. Odysseus has shown there characteristic in his twenty year Odyssey as he searches for his way back to Ithaca. First, Odysseus’ bravery, he shows his bravery by confronting massive and terrifying creature that endangered Odysseus and his men 's’ lives.
Odysseus is truly an epic hero, he has many different perils and dangers that he must face. He is a Greek soldier who fought in the Trojan War and is trying to return home. Some of the gods and goddesses are on his side, however, some are not on his side. He was stranded for ten years before he could finally go back to his family, and home on Ithaca. Odysseus is an epic hero because of his physical strength, his mental sharpness, and his cunning ability to always get out alive.
Heroes have been a central amount part of our entertainment industry. One of the most famous examples of these is James Bond. Know as Agent 007, James Bond has captivated audiences for decades. Each new movie that comes out reinforces a similar theme across the entire series, which that James Bond is clearly an epic hero.
Odysseus The central character in “The Odyssey,” define as someone who has strength, courage and confidence. In fact, his most desirable assist is his judgement and quick response. Thus, allowing him to escape from difficult situations. In addition, Odysseus is someone who can be recognized as a smooth talker, with this he has the ability to enable others through manipulation.
In The Odyssey, the character Odysseus can be considered a hero because he demonstrates many characteristics that are attributable to most heroes. After the battle at Troy, Odysseus strives to sail back to his homeland (Ithaca); however, he encounters some issues along the way and Poseidon attempts to make it impossible for Odysseus to return home. At the beginning of this journey, Odysseus wants to make it back to Ithaca with all of his crew alive. This selfless goal displays Odysseus acting for the greater good because he knows that these men have families that depend on them and would like for them to come home. Along the journey home, Odysseus and his crew come across a cyclops and become trapped in the cyclops’ cave.
Homer’s The Odyssey describes the story of the main character’s, Odysseus, 10 year journey traveling back to Ithaca from fighting in the Trojan War. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca is, in fact, the hero of the story. A hero is a person that is admired for his noble qualities, achievements, and his strength and courage. The traits that exemplifies his heroism also causes to have many problems throughout the poem which is justifiable because he is not perfect.
