Odysseus, man of pain, in an attempt to disguise himself, acts like a complete stranger in front of Athena to the island that he himself once rained, after Athena tells Odysseus that the island is Indeed Ithaca. The lovely news has Odysseus “Heart Racing” and it has him “filled with Joy” but quickly realising the significance of celebrating he stops himself.(13.285 & 286). “Ithaca……. Heart Racing, Odysseus that exile filled with joy to hear Athena, daughter of storming Zeus, pronounce that name. He stepped on native ground at last and he replied with a winging word to Pallas, not with a word of truth--he choked it back, always invoking the cunning in his heart: “Ithaca…… yes I seem to have heard of Ithaca, even on circe's broad island far across the sea and now I’ve reached it myself”(13.285-292). …show more content…

Many critics and readers may think that Odysseus crying his name out loud is a foolish act done out of pride; however, as Dimock states, it is “a case of deliberate self-exposure for the purpose of being somebody rather than nobody” (Dimock). Odysseus does this as an act to spread his kleos in the realm of the Cyclopes. Dimock also makes an analogy of Odysseus blinding and outwitting Polyphemus as an act of both, “challenge nature to do her worst, and to demonstrate her ultimate impotence to crush human identity” (Dimock). This reference makes sense as Odysseus’s act causes Poseidon to be enraged. Thus, the sea god hinders Odysseus’s voyage at each step; nevertheless, Odysseus manages to pull through all the thorns in his part to reach his family back at home.
The Great Hero AG Most people believe Odysseus was not an admirable because he was arrogant, selfish and dishonest. Odysseus was an admirable character because he is loyal, clever and brave. After his men and him escapes unnecessarily losing two men in the process, Odysseus taunts Polyphemus which leads to him saying “ Hear me Poseidon, sustainer of the earth, god of sable locks. If I am yours indeed and you claim me as your son, grant that Odysseus, sacker of cities and son of Laertes, may never reach his home in Ithaca”(Homer 124) . This quote shows that one of Odysseus’s many flaws is that he allows his pride to take control of his actions and doesn’t clearly consider the consequences. Another instance of Odysseus’s foolish pride is when he crossing the threshold Circe advises Odysseus to
Do not try to keep me, for I would be on my way at once. As for any present you may be disposed to make me, keep it till I come again, and I will take it home with me. You shall give me a very good one, and I will give you one of no less value in return.” This is Athena talking to Telemachus, Odysseus son. Athena, throughout the epic disguises herself as Mentor, an old friend of Odysseus.

In the epic The Odyssey, the epic hero Odysseus shows many hero like traits, in my opinion the most important trait would be loyalty. Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, first shows the trait loyalty on the Land of the Lotus Eaters. The next they know is the three men become addicted also.

A hero can be defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Odysseus from Homer’s “The Odyssey” exemplifies this heroic definition. What noble qualities does Odysseus display that prove his heroism?
“I’d never spare you in fear of Zeus’s hatred, you or your comrades here, unless I had the urge.” -Book 9, Line 312 1. Why does the adventure start in the Giant's cave? Odysseus's journey starts out with him arriving at the land of the cyclops. It starts this way to show why Poseidon hates Odysseus so much.
Throughout Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca, he faced many obstacles along the way which shaped him into the person he became. As well as Gabby Douglas who made countless amounts of sacrifices and went through exceedingly troublesome times to become the person she is today. Both of their journeys include a road of trials, transformation, and treasure. Just as Odysseus defeated Troy in the Trojan war and went through hard times during his journey home to Ithaca, Gabby Douglas as well faced a road of trials and similar encounters. Gabby’s road of trials occurred on July 31, 2012.
In The Odyssey, the character Odysseus can be considered a hero because he demonstrates many characteristics that are attributable to most heroes. After the battle at Troy, Odysseus strives to sail back to his homeland (Ithaca); however, he encounters some issues along the way and Poseidon attempts to make it impossible for Odysseus to return home. At the beginning of this journey, Odysseus wants to make it back to Ithaca with all of his crew alive. This selfless goal displays Odysseus acting for the greater good because he knows that these men have families that depend on them and would like for them to come home. Along the journey home, Odysseus and his crew come across a cyclops and become trapped in the cyclops’ cave.
Antinous shows arrogant behavior when Odysseus enters his home and ends up throwing a “stool he let fly hit the man’s shoulder on the packed muscle under the shoulder blade” (Homer 1228-1229). Odysseus contains his anger within and shakes his head. He thinks wisely and does not reveal his true identity unto the suitors. Disguised as a beggar he says to Penelope, “You see, then he is alive and well, and headed homeward now, no more to be abroad far from his island, his dear wife and son” (Homer 1350-1352). Once Odysseus sees how loyal Penelope was to him during his time away, he brings her good news.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero.
