That angered the cyclops, so he cursed Odysseus and his men so that they wouldn’t be able to go home. Not to mention, Odysseus sacrificed some of his men’s lives so that he could get himself and the other living men out alive. The theme is expressed through Odysseus because he was forced to sacrifice some of his men to keep others alive. Not to mention, Odysseus made other sacrifices during the section, “Father and
The decisions Odysseus made during the long trip to Ithaca made positive differences in the story’s result. Odysseus tricked the Cyclops by giving him false information about his identity which opened up the opportunity to escape. Another wise decision made by Odysseus was the fact that he took the path past Scylla recommended by Circe to get home which killed six of his men compared to them all. During the Siren’s song, Odysseus had the men plug their ears and tie him to a post so he would be able to hear the song but keep everyone safe. It may sound wrong for Odysseus not to inform the others of the dangers the crew would face, but if he did the crew would have messed up the plans to get home and chickened out during the
During that night, Odysseus and his soldiers came out of the wooden horse and attacked the city while everyone was asleep which enraged the gods. While Odysseus is trying to reach home, he encounters a human-eating Cyclopes, traveling to the Land of the Dead, finding out his mother died, and finally returning home to Ithaca but later discovered the suitors are attempting to overthrow his kingdom. Odysseus, when compared to Elon Musk, proves to be a hero through his cleverness, conflict with grief, and lessons he learned when dealing with difficulties, one must not give up and try again. Odysseus ' cleverness demonstrates that he is a hero when compared to Elon Musk. In the beginning of the story, Polyphemus imprisoned Odysseus and his men, wanting to escape the cave, Odysseus drew his "sharp sword from [his] hip/" desiring "to stab him/" then "sudden fear [linger him]: if [he] killed him/...[they]
Usually, epic heroes share common character traits such as bravery, courage, loyalty,. In Homer’s Odyssey, it is my belief that Odysseus is not heroic mostly because he was loyal when he was gone and left his wife. For example, when he went where Hades was all his men went and they ended up dieing.Even though some people may argue he is a hero because he had a good idea on how to win the war, also when Cyclops tried killing them Odysseus didn't say his name and stabbed him so they escaped. I maintain that he is not a hero because he wasn't loyal because he slept with Calypso and his men died.
For instance, he left his men in the dark; not knowing the truth about the cattle of the sun-god, and how they would die if they ate them. Odysseus told them, “The cattle here are not for our provision, or we pay dearly.” (Homer 674), not revealing the reason; which divulges his inordinate arrogance. Odysseus didn’t show leadership nor self-control here, so why is he considered a hero some might argue, but it’s inaccurate to judge people from their mistakes. Odysseus was called arrogant, but his real face is heroic; saving his army and winning the war for them. Whoever judged from Odysseus from his errors, was only focusing on the inadequate side; this idea was falsified numerous times.
Once again, readers how witful he is. Moreover, Ulysses devises the plan to make the Cyclops drunk. He does this by making the giant think he is begging for mercy by giving him wine. However, when the Cyclops finally falls into a drunken sleep, Ulysses and his men blind it. This proves the protagonists wit because, in the story, the Cyclops barred Ulysses and his men in a cave with a giant boulder, therefore, had the men killed him, they would have never left the cave.
Odysseus had lots of pride in himself and his crew. Although Odysseus got him and his crew out of the cyclops's cave, he could not hold his pride in as he told the cyclops his name. "Cyclops- if any man on the face of the Earth should ask you who blinded, shamed you so- say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye, Laertes' son who makes his home in Ithaca!" (9.558-562). If he had not done this, life would be much easier for him, because Poseidon would not have had a reason to go after him.
While Odysseus was shooting his bow in a disguise to win the marriage of Penelope, Odysseus shot a man to show that this is not ok, “Odysseus’ arrow hot him under the chin and punched up the feathers through his throat,” (1234-1235). Odysseus killed a man for trying to win his wife and take over his throne when his son should have taken the throne. This matters because he is showing himself to the kingdom after his long adventure not taking this lightly. Also, when Odysseus and his men were trapped in a cave with a Cyclops who wouldn’t let Odysseus’ men out, Odysseus stepped up and “the way they make soft iron hale and hard just so that eyeball hissed around the spike,”(388-387). Odysseus stabbed the Cyclops in the eye making the eyeball hiss and making the Cyclops blind.
He fights to the best of his abilities against many monsters such as Polyphemus, Circe, and the sea monster Scylla. There has been many claims that Odysseus isn’t hero because he lets his crew die. Just because his crew didn’t survive, it certainly does not mean he isn’t a hero. He tries his very best and even test his limits in order to get him and his crew back home. An example of this is in Homer’s ‘The Odyssey” where Odysseus tries to persuade his crew to bypass Thrinacia, the island of the sun god Helios, but they were too stubborn and insisted on landing.
He tries to escape and the soldiers were forced to put him down. Osewoudt truly believed he was innocent but there was no proof of his innocence. Osewoudt Is not considered a hero, He killed many people and most of them without asking questions…”He asked me to do a couple of things for him a couple of times. I did everything he asked” (202). Osewoudt’s reasons for killing are not heroic reasons, just a reason for him to continue living and to serve a purpose.
Odysseus tries to reason with him but he grabs two of Odysseus’ men and eats them. In the morning the Cyclopes eats two more of Odysseus’ men. Odysseus offers the Cyclopes strong wine and he drinks it. Once he passes out they jam a spear into the Cyclopes eye. The men have heated the spear to make sure that it burns the Cyclops’ eye.
