A good leader should ensure he is trustworthy, direct, and rational, while a bad leader is egotistical, dishonest, and secretive. “The problem with leadership is inevitably: who are we following? You need to be very careful who you select as your hero." Jordan Peterson. Homer writes about Odysseus in The Odyssey , who is on his way back from Troy, and on his journey home, he made some poor decisions on the journey, which makes Odysseus a bad leader. Homer proves that Odysseus is a weak leader because of the egotistical decisions, and the lack of trust between his men that he made that cause the various trials that he puts his men and himself through, which inevitably lead to all his men’s deaths.

The problem stems from Odysseus withholding valuable information that could have saved the lives of his men. For example, in Bag of Winds, Odysseus receives the sack that contains all the unfriendly winds. His men complained about "how this man gets honored and makes friends in whatever city he goes to. See what fine prizes he is taking from Troy while we, who have traveled just as far as he has, come back with hands as empty as we set out... Quick, let’s see what it all is and how much gold and silver there is in the sack.” (Homer, Book X) His men were envious of how Odysseus gained copious amounts of treasure while doing the exact same thing as the rest of the crew were doing. The crew did not gain anything from the journey. The quote exemplifies the division between Odysseus and his men. The division causes a disconnect between the leader and subordinates . In addition, the quote displays what temptation does when one does not have faith in their superiors. A good leader should make sure that the bond he has with all those he commands is as strong and brotherly as can be. A lack of trust and respect between superior and soldier may lead to mutiny and jeopardize the entire mission. Another example of Odysseus being a poor leader is during Cattle of the sun god, when Odysseus' men have been ravaged by hunger and are on the verge of madness, their ship had just arrived on the island. Tiresias and Circe explicitly stated that his men should not eat the cattle of Helios. However Eurymolchus rallied the men, while Odysseus was resting Eurymolochus plead to the men that remained `` [y]ou've gone through everything; listen to what I say. All deaths are hateful hateful to us mortal wretches, but famine is the most pitiful, the worst end a man can come to. Will you fight it? Come we’ll cut out the noblest of cattle and
Odysseus should not be granted an award for being a good leader in the Odyssey Although he fought well and won many battles he still made some very selfish decision 's. The Choices that the so called "Great" leader made caused the innocent solders to lose their life 's Odysseus chose to think by him self and not discuss with his mates about his dangerous ideas. Odysseus is A man know from the city/island of Troy, he is a so called leader, knight and great fighter. One of his selfish decisions that he made was when him and the soilders wandered into the cave of the cyclops, his soldiers suggested that they should take some food and leave, while Odysseus deiced to stay longer and examine the cyclops cave, This is were things get worse, as
Odysseus’s reckless decisions in this instance, threaten his crew and indicate that he is an unqualified leader. Furthermore, near the
The Odyssey by Homer follows Odysseus' journey back home after the Trojan War. As he embarks on his journey home, he encounters many foes. These challenges tested his leadership skills and how his men looked up to him. In Book 9, we see how having skills of confidence in authority, pride, and intellect helps Odysseus. We first see this display of pride when he says to the Cyclops, “We’re glad to say we’re men of
If a leader allows an already distrustful and disobedient crew to interpret a situation without guidance, they will act in deceit. However Odysseus lets this deceit occur by leaving the Bag of Winds up for interpretation. The men were told nothing of the importance of this bag. So when Odysseus is seen
However, examples within the literary narrative of the Odyssey leaves the discussion open with regards to his leadership. Thus, the question of leadership supersedes the topic of Arete. Was Odysseus the ideal leader or did he portray undesirable leadership tendencies? The examples that will presented will illustrate that Odysseus hubris, risk taking prowess, and at times unwillingness to follow instructions often placed his crew in danger as he journeyed Ithaca.
Webster Dictionary defines leadership as simply, “providing direction or guidance,” but to be a successful leader one must focus on completing a goal in a way that is beneficial for the majority, not only the one in charge. This can be achieved by utilitarianism, which is doing of what is best for the most number of people, and carrying out actions that lead to positive effects, instead of merely being done with good intentions. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is not an exemplary leader because he went against utilitarianism by not being honest with his men, letting his arrogance control his behavior, and by killing many people in his house without a fair trial. Firstly, a leader must be truthful with those he works with in order for no errors or confusion to occur as a result of information being hidden. In The Odyssey, not being truthful lead to negative consequences for everyone on Odysseus’ ship, and thus contradicted the principle of utilitarianism stating that actions must lead to positive effects.
Dwight Eisenhower once said, "The supreme quality of leadership is integrity." Odysseus displayed a lack of integrity and poor leadership by not fully communicating all the facts of the situation
When Odysseus commands his men to go back to sea to voyage, he is a good leader because he is telling his men what to do. He is being a leader by protecting his men from the Ciccone 's army by leaving before reinforcements come. For example, when Odysseus and his men are heading to the sirens Odysseus states “you are to tie me up, tight as a splint” (Homer 1005). Odysseus is an admirable leader when he orders his men to tie him up and do not untie him because he is sacrificing himself for the good of his men. He is a leader when he does this because he lets his men not suffer the sirens while he has to.
In the Odyssey by Homer, one heroic trait that Odysseus shows his preeminence which articulates the Greek cultural value of leading your men to victory. For example, the theme is made apparent when Odysseus visualizes “Bow to stem, trying to put heart into them, standing over every oarsmen, gently” (782, book 12). This shows that Odysseus knows his men can overcome the fear of dying and can save themselves. This is important because Odysseus’ trait is guidance and he strongly portrays that.
I didn't think leadership was something I needed to work hard at. I had already arrived”(Modglin 1). If Odysseus had just treated his crew with more respect and worked harder to be selfless he would’ve been the perfect leader, and his crew would have the utmost respect for him as a
However, in the Odyssey, Odysseus makes choices that both his crew and the reader find questionable. Although Odysseus has some positive attributes he is a bad leader for the following reasons he keeps secrets from his crew, he falls asleep at inappropriate times and is arrogant to a fault. Odysseus’s
Throughout the story “The Odyssey” by Homer Odysseus, the main character counters countless amounts of trouble. As king and leader it is his job to keep his men save and get the job done. Odysseus does whatever it takes to keep his men unharmed, and more importantly, alive. All his crew and him dream about is getting back to their homeland, but first they have to pass the obstacles. Odysseus demonstrates good leadership qualities by doing whatever it takes to get the job done, using his advanced cunning abilities to trick his enemy, and constantly saving his crew from dangers.
There are many lessons Odysseus and is men learn on their journey home in the Odyssey. Unfortunately, only Odysseus makes it home and the rest of men are dead because of their foolish actions. In the Thrinacia and The Cattle of the Sun episode of the Odyssey Odysseus’s men once again disobey him and cost them their lives. The men and Odysseus learn valuable lessons throughout their epic journey, but in the episode the most important lessons they learn are; temptation can lead to death, being obedient can save your life, and trust your instincts. If Odysseus’s men would have been more obedient to their leader Odysseus perhaps all of them would have made it back home alive.
In the book called The Odyssey by Homer, it mainly follows the story of a king of a village called Ithaca, hundreds of years ago-This man, is named Odysseus. Odysseus goes through many adventures after the victory of the Trojan War. However, this is where Odysseus, is not being as strong as a great war hero and a king as he should be. Although Odysseus was seen as a very strong person, physically and mentally, he lacks the appreciation and the care of his crew throughout the trials and didn’t think through many of his actions thoroughly and how they would affect not only his crew but people around him.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus repeatedly shows that he is polytropos, for as Zeus says “There is no mortal half so wise”(3). Using his wits, Odysseus gets him and his men out of several sticky situations in the Odyssey, proving his leadership through his actions that save the lives of his crew member. On the other hand Odysseus’ streak of constantly outsmarting challenges, goes to his head, and unfortunately causes Odysseus to develop a hubris. His pride at times makes him arrogant, believing that he always knows best, which leads to the untimely demise of his crew. While Odysseus proves to be good leader by saving his crew from trouble with his wits, he is ultimately a bad leader because he refuses to listen to advice.
