The first thing that Odysseus does when he get home is disguise himself as a beggar. “First I [Athena] will transform you, no one must know you…I’ll dim the fire in your eyes, so shining once-until you seem appalling to all those suitors, even your wife and son you left behind at home” (299). Being a beggar helped keep his identity a secret and it allowed him the chance to test the loyalty of his people. There he discovered the cruelness of the suitors. They were taking the wealth of his palace, courting his wife, and worse of all trying to kill his son. Once Odysseus discovered this he decided to kill them all, showing how true of a warrior he is, “Odysseus aimed and shot Antinous Square in the throat and the point went stabbing clean through the soft neck” (440). With great mastery of the bow Odysseus was able to smoothly send an arrow through Antinous neck, displaying his superior excellence in combat. Also, Odysseus “in the same time loosed an arrow ripping Eurymachus breast beside the nipple so hard it lodged in the man’s liver” (442). With such great accuracy, Odysseus once again shows his excellence in combat. Without both he would have either been spotted or overthrown by the suitors and he would have gotten killed trying to fight the suitors single-handedly. His great skills of Arête and Metis helped him survive once more in the
The ending of the epic poem The Odyssey is when Odysseus come back from his journey and he comes home and finds out the wooers who has taken over his home. After he killed them anyone involved with the wooers plot was severely punished. I think that Odysseus has justified his actions against all the suitors. As Odysseus finds out that all the lazy suitors are sitting around feasting on livestock.
The Suitors exhibit hubris by having no civility when they cause discord at Odysseus’s home and among his family, because they believe because they are of higher social class in Ithaca, they have a right. Athena disguises Odysseus as a worthless beggar, and he travels to his home to beg for his own food, where he an encounter with
Homer’s epic “The Odyssey” main character escapes out of all of his tough situations by using more mental strength than physical strength. The Trojan warrior Odysseus tries to get home from the long war. Unfortunately, he runs into many situations that delay him from arriving home to his family. Odysseus has to outsmart a Cyclops who is a lot stronger than him physically. Odysseus has to have the mental strength to face the sirens who will try to lure him and his crew to certain death. The Trojan warrior has to outsmart the suitors who have harassed his wife and son. The Cyclops who greatly outmatches Odysseus in strength does not outsmart him in brains.
In book one Athena is disguised as Mentês, the son of Anchialos. Then when she left she
After Odysseus gets home and finds out that the wooers had taken over his home he is furious. "I only hope that some power may swaft you away to the safety of your own home and that you may not have to face him when he comes to his native land. For not without bloodshed, will the wooers and he part one from the other once he is under his own roof."(Odysseus). Odysseus is displeased with the actions of the wooers and has a plan to deal with them.
Odysseus– The main character in the Odyssey. He is the King of Ithaca, the husband of Queen Penelope, father of Prince Telemachus, and son of Laertes. He is a cunning war hero that has been trying to return home for 20 years. Poseidon delays his journey home every chance he can and Athena tries to help Odysseus return.
Lord Egyptians, want to know why. After all, there haven't been any meetings since Odysseus left.
When Odysseus returns to Ithaca, he has to be in disguise. He has enemies at his home that will recognize him. Therefore if they notice him he may be put to death. Odysseus disguises himself as a better, like Athena said, he should have killed the suitors that took his palace. The suitors also were sleeping with the maids.
Some may say that throughout his whole trip Odysseus stayed strong in order to meet his family again and that he thought of them the whole time. However, was he thinking of his family when Odysseus was with Circe for 1 year? Or when Odysseus was with Calypso for 7 years? He just seems selfish. You could also say that he was a good father to Telemachus when he came back. Well, if you think about it Odysseus could’ve gotten home 8 years ago if he hadn’t cheated on his wife. This would’ve made the suitor situation easier to deal with and also have more time with Telemachus. While we are on the topic of suitors the first thing that they did as father and son was kill. What type of bonding experience is that, slaughtering men together out of cold blood is a good way to greet your son after 20 years apparently. Finally, you might say that Odysseus is so smart that even gods like Athena recognize his wits. If he is so smart though why did he go into Polyphemus’ lair. Killing 6 men and making their journey even longer. Also, if he is so smart why did he not realize that he spent 7 years on Calypso’s island. Odysseus sure seems to not be so
The Oddysey, a famous epic tale, written by Homer, is the story of Odysseus. Odysseus left home to fight in the Trojan War, which lasted ten years. However, it took him an additional ten years to return home. He faced many obstacles and was nearly killed a few times, but he finally made it home to his beloved Penelope. He was aware that there were hundreds of men living in his palace, and feasting on his livestock. They were all attempting to take his bride, Penelope, for their own. It was a dangerous situation for Odysseus, and so he was disguised as a beggar so that he could enter his own home without being threatened or killed. Penelope thinks the beggar may be Odysseus, so she devises a contest for all the suitors to determine who she will choose. Whoever can string Odysseus’ bow will be her husband. Of course only Odysseus was able to do it, and so his
Joseph Brodsky's poem, Odysseus to Telemachus, is in the form of a letter that Odysseus is writing.
Odysseus finally returns home and comes to find that men are lining up for his wife’s hand, even though Odysseus is still alive. Odysseus is infuriated and gets his revenge on all the suitors. He kills Antinous first because he was ridiculing him and he was also the strongest of all the suitors. He shoots an arrow through his throat as Antinous is drinking some wine. The suitors are going crazy and when he does this, but there rush of anger turns to fear when Odysseus tells what he is going to do to them. Then all the suitors change to pleading as they beg for lives and try to blame everything on Antinous who is dead! Nerveless Odysseus doesn’t believe them and proceeds to kill them, along with his son Telemachus. Then Athena sends down down
