The author Brodi Ashton is an american author that has wrote a hand full of books and she once said “Hero’s are made by the paths they take not the powers they are graced with”. This quote is perfect because it showcases that Odysseus a hero because he had the gods on his side but because of the choices he made and how he followed them through. Many people debate if the protagonist is a hero or a cold blooded killer. The definition of a hero is someonewho is selfless and will save the lives of others before the thought of his or her life crosses their mind. In the epic poem the Odyssey by Homer, the main character Odysseus is a hero because he is selfless, strong, smart.

Some one who is smart is someone having or showing the ability to a quick and witted response or action. Often one’s true wit’s show when putin a challenged position by anothers words or actions. A clear illustration of Odysseus’s wit’s are when He says.”I tied them silently together,twining cords of willow from the oger’s bed”(Homer 975). Reader’s instantly align with the idea that Odsseus has the ability to think well and save his crew. His smart’s are put in the spot light with the phrase “I tied them siglently together”. Because he was able to guilefully tie them together he was able to not raise any suspicion from the other ogers, and clyclopes. This example clearly shows that if it was not for his quick thinking to unweave the the bed and use the willow cords totiehis men up to the belly of the sheep exemplifies his ability to quickly think and get out of situations of great difficulty on many acations. Trying to get back home Odyssues had to travel for 20 years going on adventures to get pushed back constantly. Odysseus is a hero because he shows Strength, Intelligence and patience while dealing with difficult situations.
The role of the archetypal hero, who has incredible bravery, power, leadership, and determination, like Odysseus evolves in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. Odysseus is a king who led his crew on a 10-year journey after a victory in the Trojan War. His motivation was to return home to his beloved wife, Penelope. The poem was written around the 8th Century BC and is set in Ancient Greece around 1200 B.C.E. Odysseus is the King of Ithaca, which is an important factor when considering him a hero. In Ancient Greece, being a member of royalty made Odysseus powerful and placed him in a leadership role.
Brains over brawns is Odysseus’ motto. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is a hero because he stabbed the cyclops in the eye, he was a great leader, and he defeated all of penelope's suitors. He was arrogant at times and that's why you might say he is not a hero. But every time he made a mistake he backed it up.

In Book 9, readers see Odysseus exemplify this trait when Homer says, “But I kept thinking how to win the game: death sat there huge; how could we slip away? I drew on all my wits, and ran through tactics, reasoning as a man will for dear life.” (Homer, p. 1120, line 330 - 334). In this quote, Odysseus is thinking of strategies to take out the Cyclops. This proves Odysseus possesses the intelligent trait because as his men are fighting the Cyclops Odysseus was planning a master plan.

Odysseus did everything to protect his wife and son “ I would not stay my hands from the slaughter, until I had taken revenge for all the suitors' transgression. Now the choice has been set before you, either to fight me or run, if any of you can escape death and its spirits. During his trip home, Odysseus makes cowardly decisions that reveal he is not a hero. Odysseus is not a hero because he is selfish, greedy, and secretive. Odysseus is not a hero because he is selfish. When Odysseus is leaving Ismarus; the island of the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men are sailing away from the island after escaping the Cyclops cave by stabbing him in the eye.
Odysseus is a hero because he is smart. For example, when Odysseus and his men approach the giant he offers him ¨liquor to wash down your scraps of men¨ (Homer 991). Odysseus is clever by doing this because he can predict that the liquor will make him fall asleep. He knows that the boulder that is blocking the entrance is heavy so he doesn 't kill Polyphemus. Instead, Odysseus only hurts him.

Heroes are, “People who take risks despite fear”(Source 2). In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus faces many challenges that make him a hero. He battles monsters, goddesses, and enchantresses. Odysseus is a hero in the way that he uses his brain to think about and approach dilemmas. When he and his men are on the Cyclops’ island, Odysseus tells the cyclops that his name was Nobody.
Odysseus shows cleverness throughout his journey when dealing with all the people he has encountered on his 20 year journey. Although Penelope and Odysseus both display cleverness, Odysseus displays more cleverness because he is able to get his men out of dangerous situations and he deceives others to his advantage. An example of how Odysseus shows cleverness is he is able to get his men out dangerous situations. Many times in the story, Odysseus is put in a difficult situation and he needs to get himself and his men out of that situation.
