Odysseus, the main character in “The Odyssey,” written by Homer. Odysseus’s character was shown greatly and had many tales of adventure. Odysseus was able to return to his wife at home with the help of the big relationships he made. Leadership, wisdom, and his relationship with athena were some important characteristics Odysseus showed.
One of the strong characteristics that Odysseus showed was his leadership. For example, Odysseus showed great leadership when he was planning what to do with the suitors with his son, Telemachus, when he said, “Here is your part: at break of day tomorrow home with you, fo mingle with our princes”(Homer 599). Odysseus helped get his life and his family back. Also, the leadership by Odysseus helped get penelope back and also helped him and his son kill all the suitors. For instance, Odysseus also showed good leadership when he said, “Therefore you are to tie me up, tight as a splint, erect along the mast, and if I shout and beg to be united, take more turns of the rope to muffle me”(Homer 581). When Odysseus’s men were with the

For example, along Odysseus’s journey, it showed athena helping when the story said, “Athena disguises Odysseus as a beggar and directs him to the hut of Eumaeus”(Homer 596). Athena did not want anyone to know that it was odysseus and she wanted him to be with his family so that is why she turned him into a beggar. If anyone knew that it was Odysseus trying to be a beggar, they would kill him and overthrow his throne. For instance, one way Athena helped Odysseus was when the story also said, “Athena appears and informs him of the situation at home”(Homer 595). It was very kind of Athena for advising and alerting Odysseus what to do. All the suitors that are with his wife and in his house is the situation that Athena informs him. This is one way Athena helping played an important role in the
Everyone knows the story of what came to be The Odyssey, but most do not realize that Odysseus is not what we call today a "jock with no brains''. The way that he able to "think on his toes" is what helps him become a strong leader. In the Cyclops, Odysseus was able to use his brains and bronze to escape the beastly Cyclops. Odysseus was also stuck with a decision, weather to take the path where they would have to inner come the man sucking, ship destroyer, Charybdis or thee huge-monstrous, Scylla. Odysseus was a strong leader and did everything he could to help his crew, because of the story the Cyclops and the story of The Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus incited the story. Even though he lost his men in the end, he brought out the most important things in them: never give up. However, besides being a good leader, Odysseus made some bad choices in The Odyssey, and sometimes didn’t look like a good leader. Three areas/incidents where Odysseus was a poor leader was his extreme hubris, at the battle of Troy, and when he encounters Polyphemus. First off, Odysseus threw himself and his crew into bedlam with his hubris.
Odysseus For millennia Odysseus has widely been regarded as a hero, but when a closer look is taken at the Odyssey it is seen that Odysseus possesses many traits generally held by a villain. Odysseus is more morally related to Jason of the Argonauts, a man often regarded as an antihero, than the great hero Achilles whom he is often compared to. Odysseus is unnecessarily cruel, extensively selfish and lacks the leadership qualities of a great hero. Throughout the epic poem, Odysseus is unnecessarily cruel and violent, a trait that most villains tend to possess.
The question of whether or not Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s The Odyssey, is a good leader is very difficult to answer; however, it seems as though the bad things he did trumped the good things he did, resulting in him being classified as a weak leader. Countless times in this epic, Odysseus is very arrogant and cocky, which puts his men’s lives in danger more times than not. For example, when they entered the cave of Polyphemus the cyclops, the majority of his men wanted to leave so they wouldn’t get eaten. Odysseus, however, decides to test Polyphemus’ hospitality, ultimately resulting in 6 deaths.
In The Odyssey, Homer crafts Odysseus to have positive and negative traits, however his actions are justified as he is just trying to get back home. In The Odyssey, Homer crafts Odysseus to have positive and negative traits; however, he is a smart man and a great leader overall. Odysseus is a good leader, he is able to think quickly and get his men out safely. Odysseus tells the Cyclops,“ [His] name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends,/ everyone calls [him] Nohby”(Homer 323-324).
In order to be defined as a leader, one must be loyal, decisive and able to take the initiative. According to this definition, Odysseus does not fit the profile of a leader. For example, he is loyal to neither his wife nor crew. When Odysseus visited Circe, he disregarded his marriage to Penelope. By engaging in intercourse, he violated the trust of his wife while she remained loyal, despite the urges from the suitors.
However, examples within the literary narrative of the Odyssey leaves the discussion open with regards to his leadership. Thus, the question of leadership supersedes the topic of Arete. Was Odysseus the ideal leader or did he portray undesirable leadership tendencies? The examples that will presented will illustrate that Odysseus hubris, risk taking prowess, and at times unwillingness to follow instructions often placed his crew in danger as he journeyed Ithaca.
Influential Leadership Odysseus, the protagonist of The Odyssey an epic by Homer, exemplifies the characteristics of a good leader by inspiring his peers and growing as a character. One of the most important qualities that Odysseus possesses is his ability to motivate and inspire those around him and to be trusted by his followers. While approaching Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus gives his crew a motivational speech with a line saying, “Friends, have we never been in danger before this?”(p510 ln 601). By saying this, the crew is comforted and prepared for whatever comes at them.
Dwight Eisenhower once said, "The supreme quality of leadership is integrity." Odysseus displayed a lack of integrity and poor leadership by not fully communicating all the facts of the situation
Lastly, Odysseus illustrates good leadership through his use of determination. In the Circe episode, Circe persuades Odysseus and his men to stay with her. Homer explains how the
He chooses to lie and says he is a man from a land called Krete. However, Athena later reveals her identity to him and informs Odysseus of all the troubles happening in his house with the suitors. This later results in Athena and Odysseus planning on how to deal with the suitors. An example of foreshadowing for the second half of the Odyssey while Athena and Odysseus are discussing the future is when Athena is telling Odysseus that “[n]ow for a while,/I shall transform you; not a soul will know you,/the clear skin of your arms and legs shriveled,/your chestnut hair all gone, your body dressed/in sacking that a man would gag to see...” (13.499-503).
Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, however, what gives someone the title of a good or bad is decided by the decisions they make and how those decisions affect others. Odysseus led the squadron of soldiers in the trojan horse and is a hero of the Trojan War and the king of Ithaca. Consequently, this gives him experience when it comes acting in difficult situations. This experience should guide him to choose correctly when being put in a tight spot.
Athena, knowing that she set up everything perfectly, helps Oddyseus finally get the help he needs from King Alcinous and his people in order to bring him closer to home. Another way Athena shows her cunning strategies is in Book 7 as she covers Odysseus in a mist and disguises herself as a little girl as they go into town to see the king and queen of Scheria. …says, “Pallas Athena, harboring kindness for the hero, drifted a heavy mist around him, shielding him from any swaggering islander who’d cross his path” (7.15-17). Athena, drifting the mist around Odysseus, helps him traverse smoother and easier into town. This allowed him to concentrate on how he is going to present himself to King Alcinous instead of
Odysseus is a good leader in that he uses his wits to get his men out of trouble. As Odysseus and his men prepare to face Kharybdis and Skylla, his men are nervous, so Odysseus reminds them “‘Have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome, is it now, than when the kyklopes penned us in his cave? What power we had! Did I not keep my
Greek Societal Expectations From an early age, boys are taught about their expectations in society; they are taught to be polite, to get a stable job, and to provide for their family, among others. In ancient Greek society, men were taught similar beliefs. The hero Odysseus must live up to the expectations pushed onto him beginning from when he was born. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus proves to be a great leader and proves that he can fulfill the expectations of Greek society in various ways. Odysseus is always quick to a plan and always has his wits about him.
