In Greek Mythology, there are many well-known and famous heroes, but none stands out like the quest hero Odysseus. Whether in the clutches of the Cyclops in his cave, his intellect on the island of Circe, or his care for his men as they sailed past the Sirens, Odysseus bravely led his men through it all. In these stories, many traits and values are recommended. These stories seem to value the leadership qualities of strength, courage, thirst for glory, confidence in authority, thoughtfulness, and intellectualness because a good leader like Odysseus needs to care for his men while making the right decisions whether they are tough or not for the well being of his crew. The Odyssey by Homer follows Odysseus' journey back home after the Trojan War. As he embarks on his journey home, he encounters many foes. These challenges tested his leadership skills and how his men looked up to him. In Book 9, we see how having skills of confidence in authority, pride, and intellect helps Odysseus. We first see this display of pride when he says to the Cyclops, “We’re glad to say we’re men of …show more content…
While we see many displays of character from Odysseus, the one that stands out to me in this book is his intelligence and thoughtfulness. Before Odysseus left Circe, she advised him about the sirens they would travel by. Instead of keeping this information to himself, he shares it with his crew so they can navigate past them in the best way possible and so that they know what they are up against. He says to them, “Friends… it’s wrong for only one or two to know the revelations that lovely Circe made to me alone. I’ll tell you all, so we can die with our eyes wide open now or escape our fate and certain death together” (Odyssey, Book 12, lines 167-171). This excerpt displays just how much Odysseus cares about his
Throughout the stories in Homer’s, The Odyssey, Odysseus shows characteristics of a poor leader but sometimes lets us see moments where he is a good. In the stories Odysseus is faced with situations that show his true colors. Most of the time Odysseus is very brave and loyal to his crew mates. On the other hand at times he can show a lack of trust in his crew and let his pride outweigh his brain. He shows loyalty by never leaving any members of his crew behind.
To make a great protagonist that flows well with other characters, authors tend to use themes of great leadership in their stories. Homer’s, The Odyssey, is an epic poem about the journey home of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces many challenges, including the wrath of the sea-god Poseidon. In the story, Odysseus shows examples of leadership through instances of human flaw and great warriorship throughout the epic poem.
Being a skilled leader tends to be a difficult task. A leader can acquire an abundance of favorable qualities, but it only takes one harmful trait to diminish them. These poor attributes separate the best leaders from the ones that cause wreckage towards their followers. The Odyssey by Homer showcases these difficulties in an epic about a leader, Odysseus, trying to find his way back to his home. After Odysseus fights in the Trojan War, he needs to travel back to Ithaca where his wife and son are waiting for him.
Along the way, Odysseus and his crew face various challenges and events. In the challenges, Odysseus makes decisions that demonstrate the qualities of a strong leader, and through his actions and decisions, the poem teaches valuable lessons about leadership. One of the most important lessons that Odyssey teaches about leadership is self-control. In “The Odyssey,” Odysseus and his crew face many temptations and distractions that could have delayed his journey home.
The first trait is that he is a very arrogant person and this often puts him and his men in danger. Secondly, Odysseus can be deceitful and not fully communicate the facts of each situation. Odysseus was a weak leader and his lack of vision in not seeing the strength and possibilities in his men combined with his inability to effectively communicate to those around him ultimately led to his failure of not being able to safely deliver his men back to Ithaca. The story of the Cyclops in Homer 's The Odyssey illustrated how Odysseus '
Odysseus being a leader makes him a hero because he makes bold decisions and he protects himself and his
Ultimately Odysseus can be a good leader but behind the scenes, he's not. He may of saved his men multiple times, but also got them killed them due to his neglect. He might be intelligent but really he tolerably manipulated his crew by saying things such as “don’t you want to go back to your home again?”. In closing, throughout the whole story, Odysseus progresses himself and designates many Greek
Bravery, cleverness, and determination are three traits a good leader has. In Homer’s epic “The Odyssey,” Odysseus, the hero in the story, is trying to return home to Ithaca after his victory in Troy. On their way back home, Odysseus and his men hurt the cyclops, Polyphemus, and angered his father, Poseidon. With a god angry at them, Odysseus and his men had to overcome many obstacles. These obstacles led them to strange islands that had goddesses and dangerous creatures.
Being a good leader is important, caring for those being lead is important. The odyssey is a story by Robert Fitzigerald is were the main character odysseus battles mystical creatures and faces the wrath of the gods, his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus stave off suitors vying for Penelope's hand and Ithaca's throne long enough for Odysseus to return. Odysseus is not a good leader because his lack of loyalty to his men and his hubris. Odysseus is not a good leader because hes not loyal to his men and he would leave them behind. Odysseus wants to go to a cave but he would have to leave his men behind, his mean give him lots of ideas so Odysseus does not leave them behind, but odysseus is selfish and leave them anyway.
Odysseus’ Flawed Leadership in The Odyssey Motivational speaker Brian Tracy stated, “Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily, even if you had no title or position.” The most important skills an effective leader uses are communication, respect, responsibility, and trust. These skills are important because the people that follow someone want to be respected and treated fairly. If a leader doesn’t value these skills their followers will resent them and eventually stop contributing. Poor leadership can result in followers losing interest and possibly escalate to them resenting their leader.
Everyone wants to be a great leader, to be a role model for their peers, and to have people look up to them. But what does it take to become that person? Everyone must learn these lessons somehow. In The Odyssey, Homer takes the reader through the protagonist Odysseus’ expedition as he makes his way home after fighting in the Trojan War. He encounters numerous experiences that attempt to teach him how to be a competent leader, including blinding a Cyclops, escaping a six-headed monster, and running from the wrath of Poseidon.
In the book called The Odyssey by Homer, it mainly follows the story of a king of a village called Ithaca, hundreds of years ago-This man, is named Odysseus. Odysseus goes through many adventures after the victory of the Trojan War. However, this is where Odysseus, is not being as strong as a great war hero and a king as he should be. Although Odysseus was seen as a very strong person, physically and mentally, he lacks the appreciation and the care of his crew throughout the trials and didn’t think through many of his actions thoroughly and how they would affect not only his crew but people around him.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus repeatedly shows that he is polytropos, for as Zeus says “There is no mortal half so wise”(3). Using his wits, Odysseus gets him and his men out of several sticky situations in the Odyssey, proving his leadership through his actions that save the lives of his crew member. On the other hand Odysseus’ streak of constantly outsmarting challenges, goes to his head, and unfortunately causes Odysseus to develop a hubris. His pride at times makes him arrogant, believing that he always knows best, which leads to the untimely demise of his crew. While Odysseus proves to be good leader by saving his crew from trouble with his wits, he is ultimately a bad leader because he refuses to listen to advice.
Just as Achilles is confronted in the Iliad with the problem of balancing his honor with his pride, Odysseus repeatedly faces situations in which self-restraint and humility must check bravado and glory-seeking. In his early adventures, he fails these tests, as when he taunts Polyphemus, inflaming Poseidon. As the epic progresses, Odysseus becomes increasingly capable of judging when it is wise to reveal himself and when it is appropriate to rejoice in his
In the book The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, is a man who is loved and respected by many. In the beginning of the book, we learn that Odysseus has left on a journey and, since it has been many years since his departure, many people assume that he has passed. On his journey, he portrays his many traits, not all of them being good ones either. Some of his good traits include his cunning, bravery, and hard work ethic. On the other hand, his negative traits are his excessive pride, immense curiosity, and rather large temper.
