Also comparable to a modern hero, Odysseus portrays human qualities throughout the highs and lows of his journey, such as sadness when he learns that his mother had died during his time away. Odysseus should be considered a hero because throughout the good and bad of his voyage, Odysseus continued to lead his crew and came through with all of his
The fact that Louie is throwing himself into being the leader of the tough situation and using his mental skill to comprehend ideas which could lead to a different fate shows how skillful he really is. As can also be seen in the text: "He snatched the cord, reeled the raft to him, and climbed aboard. He rowed to Phil and Mac" (Hillenbrand 4, 5). This also shows how important skillfulness is due to the fact that Louie found his solution to a problem and put it in action. Luckily, it can be shown in his natural instinct to do this sort of idea-thinking process.
In the Odyssey “the Sirens” by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates his leadership skills and by devising a plan to hear the Sirens song without being tricked to stay on the island because he wants to keep himself and his men safe. Odysseus says to his men, “Dear friends, more than one man or two, should know those things Circe foresaw for us and shared with me, so let me tell her forecast”(975). Instead of withholding the information from his men, Odysseus tells them their fate. This shows Odysseus, as a leader, decided to tell his men what was going on at this time because he felt he trusted his men to follow the plan and help him. At other times in the story, Odysseus withholds information from his men as another tactic to essentially help them
(23) With that said, Santiago’s determination is the only reason that he is able to catch any fish. Also, he decides to not only ignore opportunities to boast his fishing skill, proving that he is above the common man trying to alleviate insecurities through bragging, but rather constantly displays a sense of humbleness and integrity. In conclusion, the sea is symbolic of the entire world in “Old Man and The Sea”, and Santiago barely even touched the water and learned so much, while teaching others even more.
Unfortunately, I knew that Odyssey would choose me along with a few other crewmen to come along with him to explore the Island of the Cyclopes. He has always trusted me and knows I will have his back, however, Odysseus, master of many exploits always tends to get himself into trouble. Hopefully this will not be one of those times. The voice of all the soldiers on board the HMS Anaconda echoed over the Atlantic Ocean. Captain Sherlock was right; we needed to enjoy the little time we had since we weren't sure about tomorrow. When Odysseus commands his men to go back to sea to voyage, he is a good leader because he is telling his men what to do. He is being a leader by protecting his men from the Ciccone 's army by leaving before reinforcements come. For example, when Odysseus and his men are heading to the sirens Odysseus states “you are to tie me up, tight as a splint” (Homer 1005). Odysseus is an admirable leader when he orders his men to tie him up and do not untie him because he is sacrificing himself for the good of his men. He is a leader when he does this because he lets his men not suffer the sirens while he has to.
