Odysseus was very young when he ventured out to lead the war against Troy. The war took many battles and tries, finally Odysseus succeeded in winning. The god’s found this upsetting and placed a curse on Odysseus. He finally boarded his boat and sailed off, however, after not returning for nearly 10 years his wife became weary. He has been trapped on an island for a very long time, little does he know that suitors are busy attempting to overthrow and win the kingdom. After many years, Odysseus finally leaves Calypso’s Island after being trapped. It’s not much longer till he arrives in Phaeacia, which has Alcinous rulers. They offered him a ship if he told them what happened previously that led him to them. After finally sailing off, they stop at an island, the island of the lotus eaters. The mistake they made at this island was eating these lotus flowers, putting them into a daze of relaxation, or in modern terms, getting high. His idea was forcing the people off the island and tying them up to not eat the Lotus flower. They set off once again, not to find land for some time, however, they finally found land. They stopped and got off, finding a cave and deciding to go in. They found food, sheep, which they slaughtered and started cooking. Zeus listens and sends their ship into the whirlpool of Charybdis. Odysseus is the only left alive, but still hasn’t given up, he finally gets out of Charybdis and is saved. However, his savior, Calypso, wants her debt paid back. He then spends an entire seven years as the ‘slave’ or lover of Calypso, but Athena finally thinks it’s enough and intervenes with Zeus. Finally Odysseus leaves, however Poseidon is still very irritated with him, he makes it to the Phaeacians where he tells them of his story, they give him goods and he finally makes it
Homer’s The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, contains a man named Odysseus whose story can relate to soldiers in today’s military, and how Odysseus has to persevere to get home. Odysseus is a loving husband who goes to fight in the Trojan War. His son, Telemachus, is born shortly before Odysseus has to leave for the war. The Trojan War is a long fight that lasts ten years.
Earlier in the epic, Odysseus frequently abuses his role as captain of his crew because of his curious nature. He makes several stops on their journey home in search of more opportunities to prove his skillfulness, even though he is already a king and has won a major war. When you take over a house you should have men at the front door watching for people.

While leaving the Cicones Island, Odysseus and his men landed in a mysterious place. When the scouts that Odysseus sent on inland did not come back Odysseus went out to find news about them. When he found his men they were under the spell of the lotus plant and he had to drag them back to the ship and lash them under their bench. Odysseus then set sail immediately right into the land of the Cyclopes. When Odysseus reached the new island he thought of what had happened during the visit to the lotus eater’s island.
In any country, kingdom, or household there is usually the one that seems to overrule all in that specified area. Leaders are strong, courageous, and skilled in combat and wits. Leaders are either looked at as an ally or an enemy. They are confident, bold, and respected. In the poem, The Odyssey, Homer gives us insight of how a tough, cunning, and wise man is brought through twenty years of suffering to reach is home that he weeps for so much.
With the help of the gods, he was able to return to Ithaca. On the way back home, after the Trojan War, Odysseus and his men arrive at the Land of the Lotus Eaters where Odysseus is smart and sends a few men to check out the island. “Then I sent out two picked men and a runner to learn what race of men that land sustained” (Homer 92-93). Some men ate the lotus and did not want to leave the island.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.

Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.

He used it to outsmart many of the characters, which is most likely why he made it home after the many obstacles he faced. At the Cyclops Island when Odysseus and the 12 chosen men talk to The Cyclops, they can tell he is no good. When the Cyclops asks where their ship is, Odysseus tells him it has been wrecked so the Cyclops doesn’t try to wreck it himself or take his men. Odysseus tells Cyclops, “My ship? / Poseidon Lord, who sets the earth a-tremble, / broke it up on the rocks at your land’s end” (9. 187-188).
