George had to quickly find a way for Lennie not to get in trouble.“He worked himself into a fury. “[Curley’s] going to get him. He's going for my shotgun. [Curley will] kill that big son-of-a-b [himself]. [he’ll] shoot ‘i'm in the guts. Come on [...] guys.” He ran furiously out of the barn. Carlson said, “[he’ll] get [his] Luger,” and he ran out too.``When Curley first met Lennie he immediately disliked him because how Lennie was bigger and stronger than Curley. But He was more enraged by the fact that Lennie was the reason that his wife died which caused Him wanting Lennie dead or experienced the worst type of pain. [they’re]gonna get a little place.” “[they]’ll have a cow,” said George. “An’ we’ll have maybe a pig an’ chickens . . . . an’ down the flat [they]’ll have a . . . . little piece alfalfa—” “For the rabbits,” Lennie shouted.“For the rabbits,” George repeated. “And I get to tend the rabbits.” “An’ you get to tend the rabbits.” Lennie giggled with happiness. “An’ live on the fatta the lan’.” George was attempting to kill Lennie before anything worse had happened. George was asking Lennie about their farm, knowing that George really wanted to live on a farm and tend to rabbits. George had tried to let Lennie think about something peaceful before he had died with the least amount of pain. George aimed the muzzle of the gun right at the back of his head, ready to shoot since he had heard the footsteps approach quickly. Realizing what might happen next if they found lennie. He told Lennie that it was going to be alright, he was not going to get into any trouble anymore
George had no way of knowing what would happen to Lennie. He made the decision to shoot Lennie because he assumed that Curley and his gang were going to torture
George killed Lennie for Lennie's better interest, he started with a mouse, then a puppy and then he killed Curley’s wife, who knows what he would have done next. Lennie then runs away looking for safety. When the boys get back, Candy see's Curley's wife lying dead. Curley is quick to blame it on someone, and that someone is Lennie. George is obligated to shoot and kill Lennie; he remembers the spot where he previously told lennie to go in case of an emergency and goes out to search for him. George finds lennie and is left with the hard decision of killing his best friend.
After Curley finds out about his wife’s death, he realizes that Lennie had done it. Curley says that he will kill Lennie and he most likely would have if George hadn’t done it himself, “‘That big son-of-a-bitch done it. I know he done it. Why-ever'body else was out there playin' horseshoes.’ He worked himself into a fury.
As a result, he accidentally kills Curley's wife, which prompts Curley to set out a lynching party after him. George reveals that Lennie is hiding in a brush and shoots him, resulting in Lennie's death at the hands of his best

This means George acknowledges the fact that Lennie is incapable of surviving in the wilderness by himself and Candy makes it clear that Curley will kill Lennie. Therefore, George murdering Lennie with a single bullet without him knowing he was going to die was reasonable since Lennie would have had a slow death from starvation or be eventually found by Curley’s mob and killed in a painful
And then about a year later when Lennie accidentally killed Curley’s wife, the whole farm was after him. George shot him in the temple of his head for a quick and painless death.
