“I didn't know I was a slave until I found out I couldn't do the things I wanted,” Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass an escaped slave gave his speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” to a group of White Americans to try to convince them to support abolitionism. Throughout his speech Frederick Douglass talks about the treatment of the slaves and how even though slaves are human they don’t get the same rights as Whites do. He also struggled for stopping the racial violation and helped the fleeing slaves to escape. One of the main point of Douglass’s speech was slavery should be stopped. And he also argued that what’s the point of celebrating Fourth July if the term liberty doesn’t apply equally for all? He also exhibited that a slave is also a human being like others. If white people have the right to utilize all the rights and facilities as a citizen, on the whole as a human, why will the black people lead a life as sub human?
Thomas Paine was born in Thetford, England in 1737. He was a very influential figure during the years leading up to the American Revolution, as well as during the Revolution. He published his best-selling pamphlet Common Sense in 1776; Common Sense had a very large impact on the revolution because it brought up many issues facing the colonists at the time. He talked about the tyranny of the king and why Americans should be for independence. Common sense even helped many who were on the fence regarding independence choose to help and support the many who wanted to fight for American independence.
Afterwards, I told the Lord I wanted another name 'cause everybody else had two names, and the Lord gave me 'Truth,' because I was to declare the truth to people.” (Truth). She joined the Northampton Association of Education and Industry in 1844. There she met fellow activists such as William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass.Truth started touring with George Thompson to speak at abolitionist meetings. Along with Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, Truth was one of the escaped slaves who devoted their lives to abolishing slavery. The Abolitionist Movement was partially successful because most americans know slavery was a very wrongful act.
In document E we see the rise of Anti-Slave Societies. These societies are tied around the abolishment of slavery and they want to establish them all across the country evidence for this claim is this quote,”We shall organize Anti-Slave societies, if possible in every town, village, and city in our land.”This quote shows the need to unite the land towards anti-slavery. In document H we have another example of the need to reunite the nation.This is shown in a quote from David Wilmot where he gives a speech fighting for equal rights between blacks and whites. We see an example of this quote ” I have no squeamish sensitiveness upon the subject of society, nor morbid sympathy for the slaves.” This quote shows the David Wilmots view where he expresses that he wants blacks and whites to be equal. This movement had its roots in the centuries-long efforts of African slaves and their descendants to resist racial oppression and abolish the institution of slavery. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement, he was one of the main leaders of this movement; the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” he wrote, was from a jail cell because he was given a penalty for parading without a permit. “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is addressed to several clergymen who had written an open letter criticizing the actions of King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during their protests in Birmingham. Dr. King tells the clergymen that he was upset about their criticisms, and that he wishes to address their concerns. People can’t decide what race or color they want to be.
The relevance of the case in international law. The Pinochet case established and important legal precedent. It made the world aware of Pinochet’s crimes and inspired new legal efforts against dictators and human rights violators all over the planet. One of the most famous cases said to have been inspired by the Pinochet case was the one of the former Chadian dictator Hissène Habré In addition to that, another great relevance of Pinochet’s extradition requests in Europe, was creating a political will for prosecutions at home, finally giving visibility to decades of militancy of victims, human rights advocates and lawyers in whole Latin America and in other parts of the world. In Chile, According to Stacie Jonas, the perception that the international community considered Pinochet a criminal, brought human rights issues back to the headlines and gave victims back their voices.
He fights for laws to abolish slavery in the North, yet wants it to continue in the South, he writes letters to his friends lamenting the institution of slavery, yet publicly agrees that there is indeed a need for slavery in America. Early in his life, when he practiced law, Jefferson fought the famous case where he defended a slave, and when his client lost the case, he offered him money, which presumably helped him escape. Jefferson may have advocated strongly for the freedom of slaves in his early years, and he may have written the famous line, ‘all men are created equal’ but that does not mean that he believed that African Americans were equal to the white Americans. His proclamation only stands for European and American people. He believed that African Americans were inferior to the Europeans and they could not be freed, otherwise they would create havoc that would be impossible to solve.
The African-Americans started to boycott the bus system and chose the world famous and former Nobel Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as the leader of their protest. The protesting behavior quickly spread and inspired others. It became the beginning of a movement. With Martin Luther King Jr. hands on the wheel the movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. King was very inspired of the works of Gandhi and there is a clear parallel to be drawn to Gandhi’s teaching of civil disobedience and peaceful demonstrations and the Civil Rights Movements campaigns
Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the letter from jail, after he got arrested during a peaceful protest. At the time segregation was still a part of the culture in the United States and Martin Luther King Jr. and his followers were working diligently and peacefully to try and make a change in people’s hearts about segregation. In this letter MLK Jr. is writing to defend his strategy of nonviolent resistance to racism, which he does effectively by using rhetoric. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference focused on Birmingham, Alabama to start a nonviolent direct action campaign with the goal to get the city to get rid of segregation laws. When a federal injunction was put into place to prevent the protest without permission of the city, Martin Luther King Jr. persevered and decided to go on with the campaign.
Abolitionism and the Civil War Abolitionists, both black and white, had different philosophies and tactics in trying to end slavery. Frederick Douglass was one that believed in sparking revolution through the media and political platforms. Through these platforms, he spread messages of awareness and rebellion, believing that the end of slavery had to be done by force (Zinn 167). In 1857, Douglass spoke to the masses stating that “if there is no struggle, there is no progress…Power concedes nothing without demand” (Zinn 167). Although Douglass used print media and public speeches as his main methods, he also supported acts of rebellion, even when violence was involved.
On April 16th, 1963, after being thrown in jail for protesting segregation in the height of the American Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist and pastor, in his letter entitled Letter from Birmingham City Jail, urges for social equality in America and justifies his use of nonviolent protest. He supports these claims by first stating his people will gain freedom because freedom is an American right as well as a God-given right, then explicates how the methods of law enforcement are unjust because any protection of segregation is immoral, and finally claims all of the people who have made sacrifices on the path to a segregation-free America will be the people to unify the country. Fredrick Douglass autobiography was significant to the abolition movement in many ways by giving people hope for a new America were it made many people aware of racial prejudice making it as a sickness in one’s imagination he levied a powerful indictment against slavery and provided a voice that embraced antislavery politics and gave examples of slave narrative traditions. (PUT IN AN EXAMPLE OR QUOTE. )*Douglass gives a sense of his circumstances and sentiments, but he also insists that no reader can fully sympathize with his feelings without experiencing all of the conditions he went through. Douglass wants the reader to imagine his feelings while forcing the reader to recognize the impossibility of this imagining. His knowledge made him realize that the enslaves were like robber who went to Africa and stole them from their own home. Douglass was unhappy and started to think of ways to change it ,and he then started to analyze the need of gaining their freedom from slaveholders, and the urge to runaway . “[I] got one of our city papers, containing an account of the number of petition from the north, praying for the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia…” (Par. 9) When Douglass read the city papers, he then understood the true meaning of the words abolition and abolitionist. This means that literacy was a huge impact with Douglass of the true idea of slavery and how slaveholders were taking advantage of them .
Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin tried to help. Although they initially owned slaves, They were against slavery and tried to make and enforce laws and join abolition groups. Tom Paine and Harriet Beecher Stowe both wrote books that were against slavery. He wrote, African Slavery in America and she wrote, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Uncle Tom’s Cabin amplified and even had some effect on the Civil War.
