Old people in China play a also important role in families because of the traditional Chinese ethic that we respect old people and cherish the young. Thus it is a tradition and honor for grandparents to live with their children, instead of financially independent. However, a general separation between young and old seems like a new trend. The topic that was chosen by our group is ‘Old People in China’ because our group cares about the aging population of China. Exploring the changing situation of this generation in China in the twenty first century was the purpose of this report. This aspect was chosen because that it is a new and especially growing tendency in China that many old people live alone without children at home. The older generation, who lived through the Mao-Deng years were brought up through respect to the old, which the ideals of Confucian philosophy was heavily supported by the Communist party of China. According to an article form the Global Post, those who survived the oppressive years under strict communist rule survived by stealing, etc. Now the current younger generation have plenty of food and don’t care much of the old. They ignore the old, when they are in need for a seat on the bus, even having a lecture in a hall and sleeping through it. The young also see the old doing tae-chi is weird and calls them “dancing grannies”.

However, there is another step that follows becoming an Old One because “when a miracle happens and some live to be forty-five, they are the Ancient Ones,” (28). These divisions of the citizens into careful categories suggests that ideas like structure and order are most likely valued in this society. Everyone of one age lived in the same home from birth until they received job, at which they lived with everyone with the same job. Simplicity also seems to be a value of this society because the system is very basic and straightforward.
According to a survey done on the internet of 7,000 Chinese only children, from ages 15-25, 58 percent felt lonely and described themselves as being selfish (Doc F). This policy had big impacts and interfered on the only child and it’s future. It’s understandable the population problems China had and why they did what they feel they had to do. This was something that was their fault from the beginning, so it was their problem to fix.
